I drop the card, my hands shaking, heart pounding. I look back at the street, making sure that car didn’t follow me. My eyes search the perimeter of the house, around the manicured hedges, the flowering shrubs, for anyone who might be lurking, waiting to attack me.

Who would do this? Who would give me that note? It had to be the same person who sent me the flowers. The same person who pushed me down the stairs.

Should I call the police? But what would they do? Sending a threatening note isn’t a crime, is it? I could tell them someone pushed me down the stairs, but how would they find who did it? The party was weeks ago, and given my head injury, the police may not trust that my memories from that night are accurate. And what if the press found out? I don’t want this making it into the news with some headline that reads, ‘Blaire Banks, top agent at The Rockingham Group, believes someone tried to murder her at her birthday party’. What if people thought I made it up? That I was mentally unstable? It could ruin the reputation I’ve spent my entire adult life building.

My potential buyers will be here in an hour. I need to go inside and get the house ready, but I’m afraid to go in there. What if someone broke in and is hiding in the house, waiting to kill me?

Staring at my phone, I think of who I could call for help. It’s just before ten. Adam’s on his way to work, but the dealership isn’t usually busy before noon.

“Hey, babe,” he says, answering my call. “Everything okay?”

He asks because I rarely call him during the day. If I do, it’s usually because of an issue with Caitlyn, like she’s sick and one of us needs to pick her up at school.

“I’m not sure,” I tell him.

How do I explain this to him? I can’t tell him about the note. Until I know who sent it and what it’s about, I don’t want to involve Adam. I haven’t ruled Alice out as the one who’s behind this, and if I tell Adam that, he’ll suspect there’s something going on with Rob and me. It’s the only reason Alice would do this.

“What do you mean?” Adam asks. “Where are you right now?”

“I’m at the house on Tremont. I have a showing in an hour and I need to tidy up the house before they get here. But I saw this man and he, um, seemed kind of suspicious. I was wondering if you could come over here.”

“And do what?”

“Maybe just check around the house before I go in.”

“The guy’s still there?”

“Well, no, I don’t think so. I’m just being cautious.”

“Yeah, it’s just that I’m meeting with someone in like five minutes. I’d have to cancel.”

“Who are you meeting with?”

He pauses. “Just some guy buying a car. He’s picking it up this morning and we need to do the paperwork.”

The way Adam hesitated before answering makes me wonder if he’s lying.
