You have me today
Tomorrow youâll have more.
As your time passes,
Iâm not easy to store.
I donât take up space,
But I am only in one place.
I am what you saw,
But not what you see.
What am I?
Could he solve it?
Yes. He could.
He picked up a pencil and wrote the answer along with his name, then dropped the little piece of paper into the drawing box.
At least the riddle gave him a temporary distraction. Throughout dinner, he couldnât help looking over at Eden at the hostâs table. Silently, he laughed at himself. He could understand how Liang Shan-Bo died in despair.
After the last course, Sir Victor took to the microphone before the roomful of guests. âThank you all for joining us today for this delightful afternoon.â
The room fell quiet and everyone turned their chairs to listen to him speak.
âJoshua, we wish you a happy birthday. I hope youâll enjoy all the gifts. I tell you, when I think back to my own bar mitzvah, the money gifts are all I remember.â Laughter broke out from the floor as Joshua sucked in his cheeks and flitted his eyes left to right. âBut we still have one more gift to give away.â He lowered the microphone. A waiter rolled out the jade hairpin in the glass display and a drawing box. âAn antique broker brought this piece to me recently. I thought about keeping it for myself, but as you can all see, my hairâs getting a little thin and my barber couldnât quite figure out how to keep it on my head.â
This time, even Clark cracked a smile.
Sir Victor walked to the drawing box. âSo, Iâve decided to offer it up today to someone who can make better use of it. But only if the recipient is worthy.â He glanced at a second waiter, who brought out the easel and the poster board. âThe answer to this riddle is memories.â
The guests groaned. A man at Clarkâs table whispered to his wife, âDamn! I shouldâve thought of it.â
âMy staff had gathered all the entries with the correct answer.â Sir Victor stuffed his hand into the drawing box. He picked one out and read the name. âThe winner is . . . Mr. Clark Yuan.â
The guests applauded. Clark sat back, stunned.
Mei Meiâs mouth dropped open. âGe! You won!â
âMr. Yuan, would you please come up?â Sir Victor searched the room for the winner.
Clark got up and tugged his suit. He knew heâd solved the riddle when he threw the answer into the box, but winning the prize was an afterthought.
âCongratulations.â Sir Victor shook his hand and presented him the gift. âI hope you have a very special lady who can make good use of this.â
Clark thanked him and accepted the hairpin lying in its case. A sudden urge overcame him. At the host table, Neil Sassoon had his arm resting on the back of Edenâs chair. Clark gazed at the delicately carved butterflies. Eden might never be his, but he would not go away and mourn in despair like Liang Shan-Bo.
