Twenty minutes later, John met Keystone in the hallway. “Waiting for me?”

“Yes, sir.”

“I’m not a teenager looking to sneak out of the house.” Even though that had been his exact thought—and they both knew it—Keystone was kind enough not to say so.

“I needed to know when to send word to the kitchen to put food on the table.”

“Huh. Is it that serious? Oh, wait…it is just me and Gordon, right? There isn’t anyone else with him, is there? The last time he tried to set me up with someone ‘acceptable’, he did it at a breakfast meeting.”

Keystone shook his head. “No. He’s alone.”

John could hear the unspoken “but” from a kilometer away. “What? What has he been planning?”

“I couldn’t say, sir, however he has had several delightful, eligible young women over for meals in the past month. They have had long, pleasant talks.”

“Does that include Miette?”

“No, sir. He stepped out with Miette. Every meal with these young women was at lunch. Often escorted. My impression was that these meals were interviews of a sort. I just thought you should know.”

“You’re indispensable, Keystone.”

“I try, sir.”

“When are you going to give up this thankless job and come work for me? Come back to England. I pay well. I give benefits. I don’t usually make outrageous demands.”

Keystone’s face became an unreadable mask. “That is very kind of you, sir.”

John sighed. “Loyal to the last, I suppose. Thank you for the warning. I’ll go play the dutiful son now.” Clapping the butler on the back, John girded his loins for another one of those meals with his father.

If he was adroit enough, he could get the Cutters information out of Gordon before he had John engaged to be married. Or, at least agreeing to go on yet another series of interminable dates with respectable young women—half of whom wanted nothing to do with him and the other half who were only interested in the Leeds’ name and money. Even as he thought this, John knew he didn’t have the will to fight in him. His attention was pulled in too many other directions that took priority. It might be best to bend like the willow this morning.

Phryne was putting the last of the breakfast trays on the table as John walked in. “Good morning, sir.”

“Morning Phryne. Good morning, Gordon.” John sat and lifted the lid from his plate. Full English this morning—eggs, tomatoes, beans, sausage, mushrooms, and toast. Apparently, his father was going to attempt to bribe him, or the heavy breakfast was an attempt to keep him at the table longer.

“Morning.” Gordon put down his electronic paper. “I wasn’t sure you were ready to face me yet.”

Swearing silently that he would not allow Gordon to get under his skin, John stabbed a piece of sausage with his fork. “Oh? Why not?” He knew why not.

Gordon waved the question away, since they both knew exactly what he meant. He didn’t want to reiterate himself. “How are things with the club? Still good, I presume?”

“So far.
