Chapter
Eight
After Nashâs third mai tai tiki he wasnât feeling quite so sore.
He, Eva and Bishop lounged poolside at the Song Saa private island resort in Cambodia. He had to admit, there were worse places on the planet to be.
He did his best to ignore the ugly purple bruise up the left side of his body, though heâd received a few sideways glances from fellow hotel guests. Bishop was worse. Theyâd extracted two bullets from his thigh and upper arm, and Eva had patched him up as best she could before theyâd escaped via a rumble seat on a transport plane out of Seoul. Theyâd needed to put some distance between them and Pinchot while remaining close enough that they had an opportunity to recover without flying all the way home. The five-star resort was a suitable compromise.
The idea was for them to recuperate, but Nashâs mind was consumed with plans and counter plans for how to deal with Tartarus. Heâd hounded Eva and Bishop to rest, but was incapable of taking his own advice. At this stage of his life Nash was meant to be retired, and well and truly out of the business. But here he was, embroiled in the most important and potentially globally damaging mission heâd ever been on. His body had to recover if they were to have any chance of winning the oncoming fight, but his mind refused to unwind. The mai tais were helping though.
Almost the second Nashâs mind finally granted him a momentary respite from his endless stratagems, his burner phone beeped. It was Harry. She needed to talk. Now.
Ten minutes later the team was huddled around a laptop in Nashâs hotel room when Harryâs face materialised. She was in her server room, surrounded by flickering lights from banks of servers. Hers was not a happy face.
âWhat the hell have you gotten me mixed up with?â
âI⦠I though you knew,â Nash stammered. âWe are trying to take downââ
Harry cut him short with a wave of her hand. âThese bastards arenât hiding anymore, Nash. Theyâre coming out in the open and are more brazen, reckless even. Theyâre making a play, and the worldâs not ready for them.â
âWhy? Whatâs changed?â
Holding up a single finger, Harry replied, âIâll get to that.â
Harry explained how sheâd squirrelled into Pinchotâs phone and searched his private correspondence. Sheâd used his saved passwords to access online files and anything else she could. Even draft messages he would have thought deleted were uncovered by Harryâs genius. However, the woman didnât seem as smug as she usually did after flexing her extensive skills. There was an emotion in her expression Nash had never seen before. She was scared.
âIs there anything about Paul?â Eva voiced the question they all wanted to ask.
Harry solemnly shook her head. âGiven the brief you guys gave me, that was the first thing I searched for. There were a few messages referring to a package being picked up, the same day he went missing, so I assumed that was him but it could be anything really.
