Casual Sex Shouldn’t Be Casual

People talk about casual sex as sex without love or emotional attachment. Those words don’t mean a whole lot. “Casual” implies a lack of intention and consciousness. Like: I’m wearing sweat pants, I’m having sex with you.

You could have the most deep emotional connection with someone that you just met and you could know and fuck someone for years and never have that intense of a connection as you had with this other person. The ways that we measure intimacy or connection are individual for people.

There’s not even a good phrase for having sex when you don’t want to pursue commitment or a relationship with a capital R. Monogamy has a pretty strong grip on our world. It’s so ingrained in how we think about relationships that much of it goes unexamined.
