Chapter 21

“Oh my god!” Ariel exclaimed. “I don’t think I’m ever going to stop crying!”

Standing next to her, Lani was also struggling with keeping her tears under control. In fact, all around them, women were crying their eyes out.

Vanessa and Megan’s wedding ceremony had just ended, and it had left the guests—the vast majority of them women—weeping emotional messes.

The crying had started, really, when the two brides appeared, walking together barefoot to the front of the assembled guests, where the officiant, a Polynesian woman, was waiting. They both looked absolutely stunning.

They were wearing matching dresses: knee-length, form-fitting lace numbers with spaghetti straps that were more ivory than white, and which had been designed for them by a lesbian fashion designer in Los Angeles.

The crying had really started getting out of control, though, when Vanessa and Megan exchanged vows. Ariel had just lost it then. The words her cousin and Megan said to one another had taken Ariel’s breath away. She could only hope that one day she’d find a woman she’d want to say such things to.

And Ariel could just tell that Vanessa and Megan meant every word of what they said to one another, and it made her feel as if—at least for today—everything was alright with the world.

Lani, her hand on her chest, gasped, “Oh my goodness! I can’t take anymore! That was so beautiful!” She dabbed at her eyes with a wadded up tissue.

Ariel, also dabbing her eyes, said, “I’m kind of glad it’s over!”

Becca and Krissy, standing near them, both started chuckling.

“Me too!” Krissy said, brushing some of her auburn locks from her face. “I’m fucking drained!” she added in a whisper.

Becca, Krissy’s girlfriend, put her arm around Krissy’s shoulder and drew her in closer to herself. Krissy wrapped her arms around Becca’s midsection, nestling her head on Becca’s chest.

Watching this, Ariel felt a little envious. Sure, she also had a woman with whom she could cuddle with to ride out all of these emotions the wedding caused, but Becca and Krissy had a much deeper bond than she had with Lani. Looking at them both, anyone could tell that Krissy felt incredibly safe in Becca’s arms, that Krissy just knew Becca was her rock. Meanwhile, anyone could also tell that Becca, even though she was crying as well, was comfortable in her role as Krissy’s safe harbor.

“Shall we go congratulate the newlyweds?” Lani suggested.

“We shall,” Ariel responded. She put her arm around Lani’s shoulder, Lani snaking her arm around Ariel’s waist. And suddenly, Ariel had to choke down a sob. Holding Lani like this, walking with her towards where Vanessa and Megan were greeting their guests, felt so damn good, and yet, on Friday…

It all ends.

She chastised herself. Let Friday take care of itself, she thought. Today, she is mine.

A few moments later, Vanessa was pulling her in for a tight hug.

“Oh my god, Baby Cuz,” Vanessa whispered in Ariel’s ear. “Can you believe it?”

Ariel laughed.

“That was so beautiful!” she exclaimed.

“Oh, I know!” Vanessa agreed, sniffling.
