KAREEM

My girl is snobbing me! Deejah is snobbing me… How in the fuck did I mess up this badly?!

The same girl who looked at me like I hung the moon, the girl I forever had a soft spot for, even before I set my mind on her. Way before she started becoming all sorts of curvy and tempting…

She doesn’t want to hear me, talk to me, or even suffer my presence, apparently! I run my palm over my face and shake my head in disbelief.

After the whole Chris Brown debacle, D’ ignored me for the rest of the ride. When we made it to the soup kitchen, she went straight to Ms. Carol, the supervisor, and got set up. Without a glance in my direction! I stood at the entrance, dumbfounded and just stupidly staring at her, watching as her radiant smile came back. She gave it freely and generously to everyone around her, all the while working efficiently. Serving a portion of food, letting out a warm laugh, making jokes, liberally spreading kind words… there was my girl; beautiful, inside and out.

Now, I have to shake off my feelings, and do what I came here for; spend some time with Deej’ accomplishing something important, the type of moments that bonded us.

With renewed determination, I approach Ms. Carol and get myself situated. After that, I barely see Deejah. We’re appointed to different stations and get immersed in the work. I serve a family of four, with a proud dad who doesn’t make eye contact with me, while his wife gets overly thankful, and their kids hold on to her skirts with shyness. I tease their little girls, making them giggle, at least I haven’t lost my touch with all females... The father gives me a small smile and a head nod, I make a silent prayer for him and his family. Hopefully this time next year they’ll be in their home, with a warm meal, holding their own celebration. We don’t really have time to make connections, just serve one person after the other. Some of us help in the kitchen, others prepare or hand out supply bags. There’s also the cleaning crew, wiping off tables and getting rid of scraps as the crowd rotates. I barely get a twenty-minute lunch break, before jumping back in. I keep a distant eye on Deejah. I’ve decided to leave her alone for now. She really enjoys volunteer work, I know this feeds her soul. It’s not the time or place for us. I know Deejah, and she would have been devastated if she’d missed this day because we’re in a shady place. So, I'm happy to just let her be.

By the end of our shift, I’m dead on my feet, a rewarding feeling paired with my soreness. The best combination. And, on my endorphins high, I don’t give a shit about Deejah cold-shouldering me. We did this together, even if not side by side this year, we helped, brought some relief, and hopefully a bit of joy…

On our way out, I throw her my keys with a simple.
