The day started off bad. Monitoring his news feed, a report from Missoula left him annoyed. NSA and FBI agents had broken into the home of Mary Carpenter, a forty-five-year-old single mother suspected of being involved in an international cybercrime ring. Bryson felt bad that he was responsible for screwing up the woman’s life. Although he was certain they would clear her, at the moment he needed to do computer housekeeping. I’ll figure out a way to make it up to her somewhere down the road.

Holding his cell, rereading the text for the fifth time, his hand shook. Bryson took a few moments to slow his breathing. He sat down. His day just got a whole lot worse. The message came from Raleigh Jones.

“Following up with you on the tattoo and have information. In the lecture, I showed a slide of just the thirteen bloodlines: Astor, Bundy, Collins, DuPont, Freeman, Kennedy, Li, Merovingian, Onassis, Rockefeller, Rothschild, Russell, Van Duyn. There is a group of affiliated Illuminati families, not top echelon, more like second tier: Disney, Krupp, McDonald, Reynolds. That tattoo image you sent me is associated with the Reynolds family. Hope this helps. Best, Raleigh.”

A knife impaled him; the words stood out like a neon sign: REYNOLDS FAMILY. Doubts flooded his mind, swept his emotions. REYNOLDS FAMILY! His father, his uncle—what were they, what are they mixed up with? But the real pain, the twist of the knife in his back, so real that he could feel it, was the uncertainty: What is in my blood…my genes? Who am I? What am I? He sat, powerless to stop the torrent of mounting doubt. He swallowed, trying to move the dry lump stuck over his Adam’s apple. What am I going to tell Serena?
