Ella Falls

Retrace your steps back to the four-way junction 6 and turn left toward Ella Falls. A steady descent through light to moderate forest leads to a series of switchbacks that take you across a seasonal stream, over a seep, and down to Ella Falls. 7 While Viola Falls may seem a bit tame, Ella presents the sights and sounds one expects from a significant waterfall. In spring and early summer, Sequoia Creek plunges raucously down a sheer face into a whirling pool before resuming a cacophonous journey toward Sequoia Lake.

Waterfall

Proceed a quarter mile beyond Ella Falls to a junction 8 between the boundary of Kings Canyon National Park and the private property of the YMCA camps around Sequoia Lake. The YMCA has granted permission to pass over their land to hikers who wish to continue ahead a short distance to an overview of the lake. Those who choose to do so should remain on the trail and out of the camps.

Following a sign marked GRANT TREE, angle away from the trail to Sequoia Lake and follow the continuation of the Sunset Trail on a moderately steep climb to an old road 9 that used to be the main access into the park via Sequoia Lake. Once at the road, turn right and proceed on broken asphalt on a steady, winding ascent that leads through the partial shade of a mixed forest. Pass by a couple of roads on the left coming from the vicinity of the lake and continue the climb to the top of a hill and a junction with the Dead Giant Loop Trail on the left, 10 4.75 miles from the trailhead.
