Heâs not your friend.
All I can think about for the rest of the day is the fact that my dad isnât human.
I grind my teeth together as Parker and I walk hand in hand toward his Jeep. How could Dad have known the truth about me and never said one word? He knew how difficult things were for me. Maybe if he said somethingâ¦
Parker opens the passenger side door to the Jeep. âAre you okay? You seem upset.â
âIâm fine.â
He motions toward our hands. âYouâre kind of cutting off circulation to my hand because youâre squeezing it so hard.â
I let go of his hand. âSorry. Iâm just upset about my dad.â
âWant to talk about it?â
I lower my head. âNo, but I also donât want to go home.â
Parker nudges my chin with his hand so that Iâm looking up at him. âYouâre mad at your dad for not telling you that heâs a wolf shifter, right?â
âYeah.â I lick my lips.
He glances down at my lips and takes a deep breath before looking into my eyes again. âIsnât it a little hypocritical for you to be mad at him for not telling you the truth? You havenât told him about you either. I know he shouldâve told you, but he has his reasons for keeping it a secret. Just like you have reasons for not telling him.â
âWhen you put it like thatâ¦â my voice trails off as Iâm not sure how to respond. Of course he is right, but it does little to help my annoyance.
He grins. âLetâs go get some food. After, you are going to go home and talk to your dad. If you want me to be there, I will. But you have to tell him the truth, Henley. If you open up to him, I bet he will open up to you.â
I take a deep breath, slowly nodding. âOkay. I will.â
He backs away, giving me some space.
âBut you realize he probably wonât even be at home,â I tell him. âMy dad never is. Heâs always working.â
âIâll make sure he is there.â He opens the door wider for me. âLetâs go get food. Iâm starving.â
Iâm beginning to learn that wolf shifters like to eat. Come to think of it, my dad eats a lot too.
I get into the passenger seat and Parker shuts the door behind me, making his way around the vehicle. I kick off my shoes and pull my knees up to my chest, hugging my legs against me. My stomach feels queasy as I think about the conversation Iâm going to have with my dad later.
I never wanted to tell my dad the truth about my ability. Itâs been important to keep it a secret. When I was a kid, I was convinced that my dad would leave if he knew the truth about me. But maybe Parker is right. Maybe he should know. I just need to face my fear. Not everybody who knows the truth will leave me. Those nannies that I had growing up were human.
