EPILOGUE

Three months later

Church services followed by Sunday brunch with Matt’s family had become Lacy’s favorite way to end the week. Especially now that school was over for the summer.

The past few months had been amazing. Matt’s support during the adoption process had been invaluable, and she knew deep in her heart that she would soon legally be Rory’s mother.

She’d managed to get a service to clean up Jill’s house so she could put it on the market. As much as she missed her sister, she knew Jill wouldn’t mind. It was better for her and Rory to have a new place to start over in.

Exactly one week after Maggie was born, Miles and Paige welcomed a son, whom they named Adam. Abby was thrilled to be a big sister. Apparently, they were going to stick with A names, which she privately thought was a smart idea.

“That was delicious, Mom,” Matt said, rising to his feet. His thigh incision had healed nicely, and he’d been cleared to return to full duty within the week.

“Yes, it was,” Lacy agreed, jumping up to assist in clearing the table. “Thank you for including me and Rory.”

“You’re always welcome, dear,” Margaret Callahan assured her with a knowing smile that never failed to make her blush. She was thankful the Callahans had been warm and welcoming, including both her and Rory in family gatherings.

“Noah and I will take cleanup duty,” Maddy offered, taking the dirty plate from Lacy’s hand. “I think you guys should take advantage of this beautiful day.”

“Oh, it’s fine, really...” Lacy was about to protest, but Matt came over to put his arm around her waist.

“Thanks, sis. Come on, Lacy, let’s take Rory to the park. You know how much he loves the baby swings.”

Leaving the mess for everyone else to deal with didn’t sit well with her, but Matt was insistent. He pushed her gently toward the door, stopping long enough to raise Rory up into his arms.

Outside, the sunshine was bright and she grabbed Matt’s arm to stop him. “Wait, we need Rory’s hat.”

“Got it right here.” He pulled a blue baseball cap out of his back pocket and tugged it on over Rory’s fine blond hair.

She smiled, knowing that she shouldn’t be surprised by Matt’s conscientiousness. He’d proven to be a great father figure for Rory.

And he’d been wonderful toward her as well. He’d never raised his voice in anger. If he grew frustrated, he insisted they sit down to talk things out. He’d shown her what being in a normal relationship was really like.

She loved that about him. In fact, she loved everything about him.

They walked to the park where Matt placed Rory in the baby swing, making sure he was securely buckled in before giving him a push.

Rory laughed in glee, enjoying every minute of swinging back and forth beneath the blue sky. At six months old, he was crawling, and she felt sure walking wasn’t far off, either. Then things would really get interesting.

“Are you ready to head back to work?” Lacy asked, as Matt turned toward her.
