By nightfall, she was burning rubber down the remote road through the canyon. It was so remote, even GPS didn’t work out here, but driving in an easterly direction, away from the sun, which was now just a thin swath of light in her rear-view mirror, she knew she was going the right way.

Insects pelted the front windshield as she grabbed one of the phones out of the cup holder and dialed the number with one hand. The phone rang and rang, and for a moment, she thought it’d go to voicemail.

Then, there was a click, and the muted rumble of conversation. Over the din, a voice said, “Hello?”

“David? Is that you?”

“Wh—” A pause. “Mia? Mia?”

“Yeah, it’s me.”

“What the hell? Where are you? I just saw it on the news. Don’t tell me it’s true. Did you just break out of jail?”

Shit. So only six hours had passed, and the news had already gotten out that she was on the lam. “You know why. I had to. Did you get my message?”

“I did but . . . hell! Mia,” he said in a warning tone. “Those guards . . . what did you do?”

“Nothing! It was an accident, and—"

“You need to turn yourself in before you make this worse for yourself. Your photo’s being plastered everywhere and the dragnet’s only gonna get tighter. What the hell were you thinking?”

“I told you. Chloe’s in danger.”

He let out a breath of air that hissed through his teeth. “She’s not. She’s absolutely safe. I assure you.”

“You told Pembroke?”

“It doesn’t matter,” he said in a smaller voice.

That’s a no. Of course. He doesn’t trust you anymore. “David . . .” she began, searching desperately for something to prove herself.

“No. Listen. The police have this. They are keeping tabs on her. They get that her kidnapper is still out there, and that Sara might be, too. So they moved her family to a place outside of town. She’s being well cared for.”

“I need to know where she’s living now. Can you get me her file?”

“No. Absolutely not.”

“David . . . please.”

“I’m going to hang up now.”

“David . . . She’s going to die.” Mia wrapped her fingers tighter on the steering wheel. She knew him well enough to know that he had that same bug inside him—he simply couldn’t look away when someone was about to get hurt. “How will you feel if something happens to her, and you did nothing?”

Mia gnawed on the inside of her cheek, waiting for his answer. Finally, he said, “Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t get you that stuff. Not without everyone else finding out. Pembroke would ream me.”

“So you didn’t tell him, then.”

A snort. “Of course not.”

“Why didn’t you tell Pembroke?” she asked, but she already knew the answer. He was afraid to. Afraid of being labeled paranoid, like she’d been. She just wanted him to be a man and admit it.

“I’m not supposed to be in touch with you, Mia. You know that.”

She banged her hand on the steering wheel.
