CHAPTER TWELVE

This is all my fault. I pace the glamorous living room, too stressed to appreciate the luxuries of the penthouse. I screwed up. Royally. Those guys who hit on me last night must have been part of that Irish mobster group my brother and Nolan have been trying to keep me from.

They didn’t seem gangster in their jeans and flannel. I figured them to be local city guys who picked up women at dance clubs and had threesomes. They were inseparable and tried too many times to sandwich me between them on the dance floor.

Thankfully, Nora had been at my side to push the men away. The rock on her left hand was enough to hold most men at arm’s length, otherwise they’d be swarming all over her as well.

I shouldn’t have been so mouthy, so confident Nolan would have my back. I figured he’d be close by, either up in the lounge looking down, or in the shadows watching over me. Asking about him would have only tipped off Nora, so I played it cool and even a little dangerously by flirting, dancing, and drinking with just about anyone.

I drop to the couch and curl into a ball. I ruined everything last night. Nolan hadn’t come to my rescue until after I’d had one too many drinks. I don’t normally get drunk, but I was having so much fun with Nora.

Blowing up Nolan’s phone with texts had made me giggle all night. Egging him on about watching our sex tape was supposed to get him to The Club sooner rather than later so he could whisk me out of there and make me feel like a princess.

I’d never craved to be loved and cared for. Probably because I didn’t know what I was missing. Now I do. Being with Nolan makes me feel adored. I feel safe when I’m with him, even though I don’t know what I’m supposed to be safe from.

That’s all fallen by the wayside. Not only do I continue to throw his chivalry in his face, but I’ve also brought some sort of danger to Nolan’s life.

There’s a sound at the penthouse door, and Trey steps in. Noticing me on the couch, he comes closer, his hands shoved deep in his pockets.

“You okay?”

“Sure.”

With a heavy sigh, he sits on the coffee table across from me. His knees bump into the couch. “Anyone come up to you lately and creep you out? Notice anyone lurking in the shadows?”

“Other than Nolan? No.”

“What has he—”

“Kidding. I’m fully aware you ordered him to keep tabs on me.” I sit up and curl my feet under my butt. “Will you tell me about these mobster people? I asked Nolan, but he won’t tell me much.”

“Good. The less you know, the better.”

“Sure. Until they come after me.”

“They’re after you because I pissed some of them off. The only way to get to me is by tormenting you. I’m so fucking sorry, Aves.”

“Trey, it’s not your fault.” I lean over and pat his knee.
