“Look at how pretty I am, Daddy!”

Carter couldn’t help how a wide smile bloomed on his face when his baby girl stood up from the bar chair Stephan had her seated on, with an intricate pattern of braids that were adorned with red and clear beads at each end.

“You are the prettiest girl in the world. Did you thank Stephan for taking such good care of your hair?”

She nodded.

“Good, then go upstairs and get your tablet and FaceTime abuela so she can see how pretty you look.”

His daughter left the two men alone, and Carter still couldn’t tamp down the excitement and joy he’d been experiencing since he’d spotted Stephan at CUP.

“You have to let me repay you for this, Stephan.”

Standing tall and lanky in Carter’s living room, he folded his arms and shook his head.

“Nope. Beauty days are always a gift whether I’m on the receiving end of them or not. Not to mention, doing Nevaeh’s hair gave me a reason to flex my skills, so I’m calling it a win.”

It had taken them more than an hour to get all the supplies Stephan insisted they needed, and then it had taken more than two hours with built-in snack and bathroom breaks, for Stephan to finish.

And that little traitor of his, who started bawling the moment Carter came near her head with a brush or a comb, had sat so sweetly for Stephan, Carter could hardly recognize her.

“That was labor. Also, you’ve gotta show me how you keep her from crying. That girl can burst an eardrum with her crying when it’s time to get her hair done.”

“No secret, just have to know what products to use to really detangle without traumatizing the girl. Those products I brought in will work wonders. Just follow the directions on them and take your time.”

The moment stretched out between them. It was so full with unspoken words. No man gave up his entire Saturday to braid a child’s hair when that child wasn’t his. And yet here Stephan was.

Stephan was being a perplexing enigma to Carter, and more and more his curiosity wanted to explore, seek as much information as he could to have the man make sense to him, or more importantly, help Carter understand why he wanted to know so much about him.

“I really enjoyed myself today, Carter.”

“Did you?” When Stephan nodded Carter asked, “But why?”

“Because spending time with you and your daughter made me forget about everything else in the world at the moment. It helped me remember just how fun it was to be with family and friends before life added so much pressure, I couldn’t breathe.”

He stepped closer to Carter, leaning in slowly until all Carter could do was shiver in anticipation of a repeat of their kiss.

“But most all, because you have a great kid and she has a great father, and I’d be out of my mind not to want to spend as much time as I possibly could in your collective presence.”
