CHAPTER NINETEEN

JackieNotO had not been on in three days, at least not during the hours he was online. Was that tag’s appearance perhaps a coincidence after all? Jake supposed it was even conceivable that JackieNotO wasn’t female. Had his panic been for nothing? BlueLineBobby94 had been on briefly one of those nights, further evidence that perhaps Jake had been imagining things.

Should he change his username to something less obvious? His brain said yes, but his wayward fingers somehow refused to comply. His choice had been a silent homage to a love dead and buried, as was his foolish tattoo, and his use of Jackie’s birthday on many of his passcodes.

He was wasting far too much time on games, anyway. His real task was to deal with the fucking dilemma suggested by Sam’s thinly veiled insinuations.

Sam had given him his mother’s address along with his normal, completely unnecessary admonitions regarding security. David Hilderman had a post office box in Normanskill, a near-by suburb, as well as one downtown, and he chose that ominous sounding address to use when writing his mother.

He wrote in English, not trusting his very rudimentary German and not even caring enough to verify which language predominated in Winterthur, Switzerland. He took a moment to clarify for her that the “kill” in Normanskill apparently came from the old Dutch word for creek and was not indicative of an epicenter of violence.

Congratulations on your wedding! I wish you and your husband many years of happiness.

I am now living in upstate New York and have a good job and a nice apartment.

I have been helping a friend who is trying to learn more about his family’s background in Europe. Perhaps you can help. This search is important to him as he is angry to have allowed so many years to pass without investigating. He is especially interested in his Eastern European roots and hopes to learn details about both sides of his family, but particularly his father’s side. He has one uncle who is here in the States whom he is anxious not to offend by his search.

Affectionately yours,

David
