My eyes popped open, and old instincts brought me instantly alert. This time, though, I was also confused. Alert because someone had quietly called my name. Confused because I was feeling something I’d not felt in a long, long time: waking up holding someone.

At some point I must have shifted to my back because Josie was curled up into me, her head laying on my chest, one leg thrown over my legs. She was snoring, ever so quietly. I had my other arm wrapped around her, holding her close. The soft query sounded again.

“Jacob?”

I looked up to see Flora looking down at me. It was barely light enough in the house for me to—shit, we overslept. I must have gotten that panicked look in my eyes because Flora grinned and shushed her hand at me.

“It’s six in the morning,” she whispered, “Kaylin will be up soon. You two are so cute all curled up together that I didn’t want to wake you, but I don’t want Kaylin to find you.”

I pushed at Josie’s shoulder a few times. “Josie, honey, wake up. Josie—”

She snorted and smacked her lips a few times before snuggling in closer. The rising sun’s rays shone through a kitchen window. I could see Josie’s face in the dim light, and her beauty took my breath away. On the downside, she was also drooling on me. A nice big, wet circle adorned my shirt, and I could feel it sticking to my chest.

I shifted on the couch, forcing her head to move. That did the trick. Her eyes blinked open, and she smacked her lips a few more times. She looked at me and smiled sleepily, stretching her back. The cuteness factor shot up ten-fold, and I realized that I would really like to see that sleepy smile again.

She kissed my chest, luckily not in the drool spot. “Hey, you,” she said before reaching up to caress my cheek.

“Hey, yourself.”

I captured her gaze, then shifted my eyes upward before looking back at her. She wasn’t getting the message, so I looked up and over her shoulder again. She turned on her side enough to be able to see her mom. Flora twiddled her fingers at her, smiling. I almost lost it when she got a panicked look in her eyes.

“Oh god, we slept too long. Shit, Kaylin—” but her mom shushed her with her hand as Josie struggled to get up and out of my grasp.

Flora whispered, “Still asleep. Perhaps your boyfriend should go home before she wakes up?”

Josie untangled herself from me so that we could both stand. She took my hand and pulled me quickly to the front door. “Pick us up at five?” she asked. I nodded and kissed her again before stepping quietly out and into the cool morning air.

By the time I was finished with my coffee and reminiscing, I was hard again. I shook my head and headed to the bathroom. A shower with some personal attention was needed.

After one stress-relieving shower and a second cup of coffee, I was ready to face the day.
