CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Keller arrived at the Israeli consulate in Istanbul the following day.

He and his team had sat with Ella for several hours looking at the mugshot files but had been unable to identify the man responsible for the kidnapping.

Finally, they had given Freidman the green light to inform the Greek police; by then all four Mossad agents had drifted off the grid, leaving Friedman and Ruth to deal with the Greeks who had proceeded to interrogate Ella well into the night before returning her to Israeli hands.

By the time Keller had reached Ataturk airport near Istanbul early the following morning, the story was plastered on the front page of the Makedonia, ThessNews, other Thessaloniki and Greek news websites, and from there on to all internet newswires, Sky News, the BBC, CNN, Ynet, and social media.

The official statement given by Thessaloniki police was that an Israeli citizen on vacation with his fiancée in town had disappeared, that it was most likely an abduction, and that measures were being taken to locate him.

So far, Keller noticed, no photograph had appeared and no names had been given, but he knew it was only a matter of time before Israeli media managed to track down Yoni’s family, and then all hell would break loose.

He figured he had a day or two to work it out, before Yoni’s name became public knowledge. Then he and his colleagues would be hounded by the media and his superiors would demand immediate answers.

Maya Arad, his subordinate at the consulate in Istanbul, led the way to her office at the Information Branch where they convened to figure out their next steps.

So far, no one had taken responsibility for the kidnapping and no demands had been received. Keller kept in close contact with anyone likely to receive such communications, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, IDF Intelligence Corps, the Navy, and Shayetet 13. No one had heard a word. His colleagues at the Mossad had gone all out to find any shred of evidence but had so far come up empty.

Maya had silky black hair, lively almond eyes, and a perpetual smile, her sculpted lips rosy around a set of shiny white teeth, her smooth white skin radiating in stark contrast to her black hair. She was a joy to watch, Keller thought, even though he had hardly slept for the past two days, managing only a few hours at the airport and then on the plane on the short flight from Thessaloniki. MARK

She was slim and quite tall and wore an oversized gray sweater over black pants and high-heeled shoes. She had been with the Mossad for eight years, joining straight out of military service where she had served as an intelligence officer at the renowned 8200 Unit, where the vast majority of the IDF’s intelligence was gathered.

Keller had served in the same unit years before her and had been her shooting instructor at the Mossad for a spell. He had asked especially for her when his previous subordinate had been relocated to Belgium.
