Mom and I have an early mother-daughter dinner because Dad had to stay late at work today for a meeting.
I wonder where Maddieâs notebook is now. I roll my carrots around on the plate, separating them from the pile of peas.
âCharlotte.â
âHmm?â
âGive peas a chance.â
I give Mom a half smile. Maddieâs pages will be all over the school tomorrow. Oh no. They could be online. I didnât even think about that. If she ever needed a friend, itâs right now.
Mom frowns. âArenât you the least bit excited?â
âAbout what?â
She feels my forehead with her hand. âAre you sick?â
âNo.â But I feel like human garbage. Does that count?
âWicked! Itâs tomorrow night!â
âOH! It is! I completely forgot!â
Mom shakes her head.
As soon as dinnerâs over, I call Maddieâs cell. It goes straight to voice mail, which never happens. I frown and dial her parentsâ number. The phone rings twice, and her mom answers.
âHi, um, is Maddie there?â
Thereâs a pause. âCharlotte Andrews, is that you?â In the background, I hear Maddie say, âWhat! Charlotte?â
Itâs not too late. I can hang up the phone right now and pretend this never happened. But I wonât, because I canât get Maddieâs haunted, panicked eyes out of my mind. What was it Ms. Harper said? Tell the truth. Make it count. I brace myself. âYes.â
âHey, hon.â Maddieâs mom clears her throat. âI heard you had a rough time.â
I gulp. I wonder how much Maddie told her. âYeah.â I say. âItâs, er, different now.â
As if she just read my mind, Maddieâs mom says, âCharlotte.â I donât know how moms do it, but they can say my name and have it mean much more. Itâs just one word, but when she says it, itâs like sheâs saying, Sweetheart, I know thereâs more to it than that. And then she actually says, âI know all about it.â
My heart plummets through the floor. I knew it. âYou d-d-do?â
âOf course I do. Maddie told me.â Her voice is gentle. âSheâs been having a hard time, too. Why donât you sit with her again?â
I hug my knees to my chest and fight the tightening in my throat. I canât cry now. âI, um, I didnât knowâthat um, that is, what happened wasââ The giant lump in my throat chokes my words, making them come out in a squeak.
The line is silent for a moment. This is going to be so much harder than I thought.
Finally her mom says, âMaddie doesnât understand, and Iâm having a hard time with it myself. We miss you.â
And I miss you. Iâm so ashamed of what Iâve done. My lungs feel like theyâre getting smaller by the second. I canât breathe. I blurt out, âI have to go.â
âWait. Donât you want to talk to Maddie?â
I did. I do. I just canât even speak right now. The questions are too hard, and my answers too shameful. âIâm sorry. I need to g-g-go,â I say, my voice cutting in and out.
âWait a minââ
âGoodbye, sorry,â I whisper, and click off the phone.
