An Ordinary Moment

The days and weeks since the Jewish musicians had come to the village of Bellafortuna passed quickly. They settled into the daily routine of their new lives. They continued to study the customs of their neighbors as well as their language. With the help of Kurt, Ludwig and Father Dominic, the Jews slowly learned to communicate better and better with their fellow villagers.

A sense of excitement filled the Jewish musicians when they joined the village performers in the Opera Orchestra di Bellafortuna. Heinrich was readily granted the first violinist spot. Music was back in his life. The orchestra continued to play its Saturday concerts and on Sundays rehearsed at the Anfiteatro di Bellafortuna.

Ludwig continued to compose again. He finished Munich’s Tears and presented it to Vincenzo who said it would be an honor for the orchestra to play it at one of the concerts.

While living and working among the villagers, friendships between the refugees and the villagers began to grow. The Jewish refugees fell more and more in love with Bellafortuna, its surroundings, and its people. And of course, more than friendships blossomed.

One day in March, Elizabetta Adorno, the female member of the Società, came into Il Paradiso to buy a bottle of wine. Giuseppe and his wife had gone out but had left Kurt inside checking the inventory.

Elizabetta, upon entering, said, “Oh, I was expecting to see Signor Sanguinetti. I am looking to purchase a very cheap bottle of wine.”

Kurt looked directly into Elizabetta’s cornflower-blue eyes and was immediately captivated. “Buon giorno, fanciulla. Mi chiamo…” He stopped himself and then proceeded to say pensively, “Luca Marino.”

Elizabetta spoke slowly in Italian and replied, “Very nice to meet you, Signor Marino. You speak Italian well.”

“Parlo un po ‘di Italiano.” (I speak a little Italian.) His heart raced inside his chest.

“Just a little? You know more than that. How did you learn it?”

“Opera. I studied opera.”

“I have seen you in the orchestra. Do you sing too?”

“Not in a very long time.”

“Where are you from?”

“Bellafortuna,” he said with a nervous smile.

She laughed. “No, really. Where?”

He shrugged his shoulders and said not a word.

Elizabetta smiled. “Tell me. I won’t tell anyone.”

“Vienna,” he whispered.

“Vienna. I bet that’s a beautiful place.”

“A magical place.”

“Do you have a recommendation for wine?”

“Signor Sanguinetti just got this Spanish wine. It’s cheap. He says it’s cheap because it’s Spanish wine. I think it tastes good.”

“That would be great. Grazie.”

“Prego.” Kurt walked over to grab the bottle and upon handing it to her said, “Pay me over there.”

As they walked to the counter, Elizabetta asked, “Would you mind if I asked you your real name?”

He leaned forward and said quietly, “Kurt. Kurt Hofmann.”

“Kurt. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“And you as well. What is your name?”

“Elizabetta. Elizabetta Adorno.”

“Is there a Signor Adorno?”

“No. My husband was killed in the war. He was fighting with the Resistance in Milan.”

“The Resistance in Austria saved my friends and me. Your husband was a brave man.”

“Grazie.”

“I am sorry for your loss.”

Elizabetta asked, “Do you have a wife?”

“No.
