I'll use these two fools in my kitchen to my advantage. Jarod will pay for what he's done to Destiny, for sure. Over and over.

"You mean to tell me," Jim growls, still crunching Jarod's clothes in his fist," you terrorized my daughter and tried to harass her into sleeping with you? Are you sure you didn't have something to do with that explosion when things didn't go your way? Maybe when your ego was on the damn line?"

"Hold on now," Jarod wagers, wriggling in Jim's grasp. "If you're willing to spare my life for a second and let me finish my story, it'll all come together."

Jim squints as he reflects for a moment. Yeah, the deal is too tempting, as Jarod did imply Jim could end his life after the story.

"You should keep it quiet, dude," Zach cuts in.

"It's been a decade. The case is closed," Jarod points out before patting Jim's hand to let him go.

Jim breathes fire for a few seconds more, his nostrils flaring before he lets Jarod go and shoves him against the sink. "This better be good."

Jarod winces, adjusts his clothes, and brushes back a strand of his platinum hair. "The bomb in the park… it was one of my enemies. They wanted to get me."

I look at Ella. Damn it. I always thought it was her.

"What happened?" Jim asks. "It was all over the news one minute and then total silence the next."

"For good reason." Jarod nods. "You know who my family is."

Pretty sure everyone's eyelids twitch in annoyance.

"You using this chance to brag or what?" I cock my head. "Because if so… Jim, you can send him six feet under now."

"Way ahead of you there, son," Jim agrees.

I notice his use of the word son. By some miracle, Jim may approve of me no matter how much I've messed up.

"You're not off the hook yet," Jim answers my internal question as if he's reading my mind.

Despite how much I've wronged his daughter, he still sees me as family, though. I see it. It's something. I'll take it.

"If you two are finished," Jarod says sarcastically. "Now, as I was saying, I'm sure you realize how rich I am, given my family's business in the oil industry. Well, the son of an electrical company, who my dad caused to go bankrupt, had it out for me. Geoffrey had it all warped in his mind. He decided to pay my family back. He was going to take me out."

"What kind of logic is that?" Dad asks.

"Not much," Zach answers, chuckling.

"Dad found out there were cameras. That's how––"

"They were all over the park," Zach says, pouring another cup of coffee. I see him trying to make amends by offering Ella some coffee, but she moves her cup away from him.

Jarod crosses his arms as he leans against the sink and waits for the attention to return to him.

"What happened to your—the enemy?" Jim asks.

"Dad didn't want anything to go public. He knew someone who… took care of things.
