Working in the Romanian apartment wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Actually, it wasn’t bad at all.

I left the campground at 1:00 p.m. and went directly to the apartment. Daniela ordered Grigore to babysit me. He sat in a card table chair a few feet behind me and stared over my shoulder. I was put off by this distraction at first, but after a while, I forgot he was there.

The Romanian crooks seemed to come in two varieties. There was the brash, loudmouth type like Viktor and then the quiet contemplatives like Grigore and Alexander. Daniela was more complicated. She had brash moments, probably by necessity to exert authority, as that didn’t really seem to align with her overall personality type.

Thank God Grigore wasn’t a talker like Viktor. He was a drinker, though, because he excused himself periodically to refill a plastic cup from a vodka bottle on the kitchen counter.

I had spent a few days without tech after Trailer Alpha was destroyed and had been climbing the walls. An analog life was no life at all. I reconnected to the dark web and did a fair amount of minor hacking. I hacked the campground Wi-Fi and was able to scrape some data from the connected phones and devices. I rerouted the feeds from all the cameras to the new server in the apartment. To Travis, they would continue to appear dead.

The setup was only a fraction of what I had at Trailer Alpha, but it would be good enough for what the Romanians wanted to do. I could pull pictures from the cabins or the apartment. I still had a hookup in Randy’s yacht but was unsure about the disposition of that asset. Daniela couldn’t simply start using it; it was part of Randy’s estate, and the title would be transferred to someone else once the court figured out who his heirs were.
