Miriam Banks looked around the dark room, trying to see if there was light penetrating anywhere. There were small lines, eight feet off the ground, in the faint shape of the outline of a rectangle.

Boarded windows, she thought. She tested the bonds at her hands and feet, and couldn’t move them. Her wrists were stuck securely to the chair she was in. The room smelled abrasive, like off-brand cleaning products.

Outside, there were voices, a mixture of English and Spanish. She didn’t speak Spanish and had no intention of learning it just for work. Anyway, Clark spoke it and they were always together.

Miri spat, the taste of stale blood pungent in her mouth. The knot on her forehead throbbed. The noise outside grew louder until the door of the room swung open.

The overhead light flipped on, burning Miri’s eyes. A fat man in a uniform stood in front of her. His eyes had deep, puffy bags residing underneath them.

There was no telling when that light might be flipped off again, and she needed all the information she could get. Despite her stinging eyes, Miri took quick stock of her surroundings. She was in some type of maintenance room. There were mops and buckets, boxes of trash bags, and bottles of bleach.

“Mrs. Klein?”

“It’s Ms.,” Miri said. “Why, are you asking me out?”

“Ms. Klein. My apologies. I am Commandant Mora of the San Pedro Municipal Police Force.”

“Couldn’t make it in the DIS, huh? Had to slum it with the locals?”

Mora looked at Miri with a puzzled look on his face.

“I’m sorry, I can’t repeat that in Spanish,” she said. “No hablo.”

“My English is perfectly fine. In Costa Rica, many people speak English. I am confused as to why you feel the need to insult me. You are, after all, under arrest. Obviously, my men and I can’t be too bad at our jobs.”

Miri shrugged. “Under arrest? Am I? In that case, I’d love to exercise my consular rights.”

“Ah, see, there is the trouble. Your rights aren’t applicable at the moment. You are a suspected terrorist. Due to that, we are holding you for the time being, until we can determine your motivation.”

“Terrorist? That’s a new one. Do you always keep terrorists in your cleaning closet with the windows boarded up?”

“You are a special case. You severely wounded three of the men who came to arrest you. One had to be airlifted to a hospital in San José. He is on a ventilator as we speak. You are too dangerous to be with the other inmates.”

“Next time, your men should really knock before you come into a lady’s room. I could have been getting dressed.”

Mora’s eyes lingered over Miri. She didn't want to know what he was imagining.

“We are waiting for a member of the DIS to come out to us, to speak with you more. If they are happy, then I will be happy.”

“Maybe you’ll get a promotion.”

“It would be nice not to… slum it anymore.”

Mora left the light on, but shut the door on the way out.
