CHAPTER 14

DUFF STEWART SAT on the edge of a bunk, one of a dozen beds in a makeshift army barracks. Under the canvass roof, the summer heat of Berlin was oppressive. And privacy did not exist.

“Why so glum?” Todd Aiken had arrived unannounced. “Not a smile. Nothing.” The reporter bent to peer into his eyes. “It’s no way to treat a friend with good news.”

“Oh, I could use good news.” Stewart rose abruptly, almost forcing Aiken off balance. “Talk to me.”

“I’ve met a man with a line on accommodation. And, he knows you. Guy by the name of Murphy. He’s in the transportation division and has fond memories of the two of you in action or to be honest—avoiding action.”

“Murphy? In Berlin?”

“Yah. A bit of a wheeler-dealer. He’s only been here a few weeks and already has his finger on the pulse of the city.”

“That sounds like him. Tell me about this accommodation.”

“He has a list of undamaged apartments. All you have to do is convince the present occupant to move out. He’ll show you tomorrow. That’s if you can cast off the depression.”

“Ok!” Stewart brightened. “But I can’t talk about my other problems. If I did, Intelligence might lock me away. Well, that’s sounds more dire than it is but an issue has surfaced and I’m ordered to keep mum. Perhaps, in a few days I can explain. But not yet.”

“Make it fast. I’m going home soon. Another few weeks and I’ll be back in Canada.”

“Aren’t you lucky. What happens to the woman?”

“Hah! Inga and I have a good time but there’s no long-term commitment. I’ll give her something before I leave.”

“Like what—a bun in the oven?”

“Duff. Don’t be such a pessimist. Medics give out condoms, for free.”
