Later that night, flames leaped high into the air from a mammoth pile of wood. Rings of soldiers sat, cross-legged, all about.

Grasping his rosary between weary fingers, José got to his feet. “The third joyful mystery,” he announced, “is the birth of Baby Jesus in Bethlehem.”

As he finished the first half of the Hail Mary, his eyes swept around the circle.

It feels so different, he thought, as he waited for the soldiers to finish their part. I’m praying about the first Christmas with Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus, and here I am so far from home—like them.

“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee . . .” he continued. “And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.”

After the Rosary, the soldiers broke into groups and slowly made their way back to where they slept, some in tents, others in the open.

As José gazed up at the stars from beneath his blanket, it dawned on him: I may be far from home, but this is where I belong, just as Baby Jesus belonged in Bethlehem that first Christmas night. I’m sure he’s happy to see me here, fighting for him.

He pulled the blanket over his head and sleep overtook him.
