Seth

After watching Benny all night and noticing the men stare, I couldn’t let her walk to her car alone in the dark. Plus it gave me an excuse to spend some time with her.

We walked in silence, me because I couldn’t think of anything to say and she was most likely too tired. The dark circles under her eyes had gotten worse since this afternoon. Everything in me wanted to make sure she was okay, but she had closed that conversation down. I didn’t blame her; we weren’t friends anymore. Maybe if she knew I was Jeremy, she would tell me what was going on.

When we reached her car, I stood next to her waiting for her to unlock it and noticed several boxes in her backseat. It looked like she had everything she owned in her car. She had mentioned that she just moved here, so I hoped she just hadn’t had time to unpack. “You live nearby?” I asked.

Her smile fell, and she stared into her car. “You could say that.”

No. Please don’t tell me Benny had been living in her car.

“You said you just moved here?”

“Yeah. Not even a week ago.”

Feeling the worry rise in my chest, I asked, “Are you living in your car?”

She looked at me with pleading eyes and I knew. “Please don’t tell anyone. I got kicked out of my apartment by my roommates, and they won’t give me my money back. So...” She waved her hand at her Volvo. “I’m staying in my car until I have enough money saved.”

I stepped away from her car and began pacing. Who would kick her out? Why? “You can’t stay in your car,” I said, more to myself than to her. If I had known… I turned around and faced her. “What happened?” Before she could answer, I waved a hand in the air. It didn’t matter. “Never mind. You’re coming home with me. My place is small, but my couch pulls out into a bed.”

“Seth…” she said barely above a whisper.

“Benny, don’t argue with me. I can’t let you sleep in your car. I just…No.” I pointed toward my motorcycle. “You can follow me.”

“Are you sure? You don’t even know me.”

But I did.

“I’m sure. And you can stay as long as you need to. It’s just my cat and me.”

“You have a cat?” she asked with a smile.

I shrugged. “Yeah. Why?” Was she allergic? Would I have to find a new home for Cat?

“I just… for a second there, I imagined you being on one of those websites that posts pictures of hot guys with cats.”

Her smile grew as if she were mentally taking pictures in her head, but my head was stuck on the words she said. She called me hot. It made me ridiculously happy, and I tried to hide my smile. “There’s websites for that?”

She smirked. “There’s a website for everything, but yes and they’re verrry popular.”

“Wow. I don’t know what to say about that.”

She laughed causing my stomach to knot. I hadn’t realized how much I missed that sound.
