“So, did I pass?”

The two of them sat on beach towels at the top of Sunset Rock, which Calvin explained was the name for…the exact reason he just showed her. Melanie sat in between his legs, leaning her back against his chest as he twirled his fingers through her drying hair.

Calvin smiled. “With flying colors.”

“Who knew ‘flying’ would be taken so literally,” Melanie mumbled, causing Calvin to burst out laughing, making her smile. He reached for his backpack and grabbed a white paper bag, retrieving a rather long sandwich.

“Picnic dinner?” Melanie asked.

“I don’t think grinders need to be confined to meal times,” Calvin answered, unwrapping the sandwich, the smell of salami, oil, and oregano wafting toward her. “They’re perfect for any time of day.”

“Any time of day?” she teased. “Also, what’s a grinder?”

“Headband, didn’t you grow up in Connecticut?”

“Yeah, but I’ve never heard the word ‘grinder’ before.”

“Summer people.”

Melanie slapped his leg playfully as he chuckled, breaking apart the sandwich and handing her half. “It’s the same thing as a sub, or a hero, or whatever you want to call it. But here in the Port, we call it a grinder.”

“Why do you guys call it the Port?” Melanie asked, picking off a string of lettuce dangling from her sandwich.

“Easier to say, I guess. I don’t know, I just say it because the locals have for years.”

“Did you grow up here?”

“Oh, good, questions,” Calvin said. “I also have many questions.”

“Mmm,” Melanie answered, her mouth full of the most delicious bite of sandwich—er, grinder—she’d ever had in her life.

“Cool, I’ll go first,” Calvin said. “Why did you move to Haverport?”

Melanie swallowed. “Really jumping into it, aren’t we? I believe my question was first.”

“Fine.” He placed his half-eaten sandwich on the paper bag. “Most of my life. I moved here when I was five.”

“From where?”

“That’s another question, you have to answer mine first.”

Melanie glowered, then took a deep, steadying breath. “Duncan did something really stupid back in Garrison that got him expelled. Haverport High said they would let him attend here, but he has to retake his junior year.”

“And how do you feel about it?”

“My question first,” she taunted. She also didn’t know how to answer that one…or how to continue telling Calvin why they were here. She wasn’t sure if she was ready for that yet.

He sighed heavily. “Boston. My mom brought me here to stay with Gram for the summer and when she came to pick me up, I told her I didn’t want to leave.”

She wanted to dive in more, but he was also being massively cryptic, which she guessed was to be expected. It’s not like she was giving him full answers as well.

“I honestly don’t know how I feel about it,” she admitted to him. “There really wasn’t much for me in Garrison besides my education. I had acquaintances from my classes, but didn’t really make any friends because…”

Because I didn’t want them finding out, she thought to herself. She hesitated, not sure if she wanted to go that deep yet.
