CHAPTER SEVEN
HIS MOUTH WAS on hers, his breath mingling with hers. His arms were wound around her and his legs tangled with hers. And oh, it felt so good. She thought of nothing, no one, but him as she returned the kiss, arching closer, her tongue meeting his in a sensual duel.
It had been so long since sheâd felt like this, wanted like this. Janice tightened her arms and...and awakened to find she was squeezing her pillow. Blinking, still wrapped in the dream, she lay on the couch, letting her heartbeat settle.
It had seemed so real, so warm and wonderful. David had... She popped her head up so quickly she felt a momentary rush of dizziness. David!
He lay on his side at his end of the couch, his head pillowed on one arm, the other arm dangling over the edge, almost touching the floor. One leg was bent at the knee, the other stretched out where it touched her own stockinged foot. He was snoring lightly and sound asleep. Releasing a nervous breath, Janice let her head fall back.
Why had she dreamed so vividly of kissing him? Sheâd not had sensuous dreams in years. What was wrong with her? It had to have been their dance, the kisses theyâd shared last night, the warm familiarity of their evening that had triggered the response. Feeling the flush of guilt, she slowly eased out from under the afghan and got up, trying not to wake him.
She walked to his end and saw that he was still sleeping. Unable to resist, she studied him. There was something terribly vulnerable about a man who lay lost in sleep, unaware he was being watched. Those sensitive blue eyes were hidden beneath heavy lids fringed with dark lashes. His overnight growth of beard gave him a rakish look rather than an unkempt one. His mouth was slightly open, that mouth that sheâd been dreaming of a few short minutes ago.
His blanket was tangled and all askew. He was long, loose-limbed, rawboned, his shoulders broad, his stomach still flat. He was moving into middle age with few noticeable changes from the young man whose body had once inspired more than one female fantasy. Turning from the memory, she left him.
Wandering to the front window, she saw that the fire had gone out, but that heat was flowing from the vents and the electricity was working once more. Vaguely, she wondered how long ago it had been restored. Protected by the porch, the picture window wasnât snow-covered, and she could see out. The sky was gray and heavy with clouds, but at least it was daylight. Wind-driven snow covered the porch, hiding the steps completely, and the yard was mounded high with artistic drifts.
Sheâd worried unnecessarily about her neighbors noticing that Davidâs car had spent the night parked in front of her house. The spot where theyâd left his Lincoln was piled high with snow, the front end unrecognizable from the back end. The wind was still blowing, though halfheartedly, but the snow had been reduced to a light sprinkle.
