The last three weeks have both taken forever and gone by in a blur. The road is finally clear, and today a moving truck arrived up at the lodge with a whole bunch of Haydn and Emily’s belongings while Haydn flew up with Emily and Blossom.

I was at the lodge to open the door, and the movers quickly set everything inside before they drove off again. With so many unpacked boxes littering the floors, there will hardly be much room for anyone to get comfortable.

Once Haydn has landed, I make a suggestion that they both seem more than willing to take me up on. “Maybe you guys should just come up and spend a night in the inn,” I tell them. “Tomorrow, we could come down and start to put things away. We can make sure all the rooms are fresh and comfortable, and we can make sure you’ve got plenty of food and such.”

“Will I be able to share your room if we do?” Haydn asks softly in my ear.

“Bill would probably have a cow,” I say. “But then again, I don’t care if Bill likes it or not.”

Haydn grins. “Really?”

I smirk. “That, and he’s not here anyway. He’s in Gold Bar until tomorrow visiting our father.”

“Oh yeah, Jess told me about him,” Haydn says with a nod. “Runs a horse ranch over there, right?”

“His new wife owns a horse ranch, yes, but he’s hardly the one out there taking care of business. Maria’s got farmhands for all that, and occasionally my brother for things like helping a horse birth her foal.”

“Seriously? Your brother has veterinary skills?”

I scoff slightly. “Where do you think he got money from? It sure wasn’t from anything around here, that’s for sure.”

He laughs. “Okay, girl, don’t bite my head off.”

I blush. “Sorry, it’s not you. I’m still a bit disappointed in Dad for just up and dumping this whole mess on Bill’s shoulders like he did. I know Mom was dead for three years before he took up with Maria, but he still sprang it on us so suddenly. Part of me still hasn’t forgiven him for that.”

“I suppose, given the circumstances, that you probably ought to introduce the two of us some time, though,” Haydn points out. “He’s going to be our baby’s grandfather, after all.”

“You don’t need to worry that I’ll resent you like that, Katy,” Emily mentions from her spot across the room. I thought she was fully immersed in her video game, but apparently, she is a multitasker.

“I’m not worried, sweetie, because your dad has been very up front, and as far as I know we don’t have any plans to elope tomorrow. Some adults are a bit more responsible than others.”

She grins and nods, turning back to defeat an enemy first before she says, “Yeah, that’s true. But Bill seems to be doing a great job holding everything together. He was responsible enough to know when he needed to ask my dad for some help.”

I roll my eyes slightly, but I know she’s right.
