KATIE

We’re basking in the afterglow. Lying together naked and sated with a zombie movie playing on the television in front of us. We each have half of a sandwich in our hands and at least half of our body is still touching one another.

“What about your first kiss?” I ask before taking a bite.

“Oh, man. Her name was Julie. She was two grades older than me and it was at a birthday party.”

“7 minutes in heaven?”

“No, no games involved.”

We were positioned in the corner of the party. We were both extremely bored. I can’t remember whose birthday it was, but I was like twelve or thirteen. She was an eighth-grader. I had a crush on her. She was the cool girl, but also the hot mess. Well, she came up to me and started talking to me; she kept inching closer to me, and then bam, she laid one on me. She pushed her tongue through my tight virgin lips and I remember it being so slimy and weird. After that, I wanted to kiss every girl that I could.”

“And did you?”

“No. I kissed a few girls here and there, but I got a stern talking to from my mom about the birds and the bees that night after someone told her what happened. What about you? First kiss?”

“Rusty James.”

“What kind of name is that?”

“Oh man, I had the major hots for him. He, too, was a few years older than me. His little brother was my age and my best friend. One day, I was over at their house. It was a group of us. They had a basement with a theater basically in it. There were beanbags, a few loveseats, and maybe a recliner or two. I was on the loveseat all by myself in the very back. Rusty went somewhere, then came back and stayed with me. He ate some of the popcorn from my bowl and then when I went to grab one, we reached in at the same time and, well, it was like a light turned on and we looked at one another. He looked at my lips and then kissed me. Tongues and all. He touched my boob, a lot, and then we went back to watching the movie as if it never happened. We never spoke about it again, either. Not until high school.”

“What happened in high school?” he asks.

“We started dating, my sophomore year, his junior.”

“Well, you guys didn’t become high school sweethearts or anything, so I’m thankful for that. What happened to you guys? Anything that I’ll get jealous over?”

I laugh, “Absolutely not. We stayed together for a few years, but we drifted apart when he went away to college, as couples do.”

“Cool. What about your family? You hung out with kids with theaters in their basements. Was that your life?”

“Yes, and no. We were a very sports-orientated family. Dad played professional ball, and so with that came those theaters in the basements.”

“Wait, your dad played pro?”

“Yeah. He and my mom were high school sweethearts.
