Chapter 20
Not mere days since he learned of the Lady of Woodhearstâs desire to restore her lands to the Wulfriths. Not mere days he withheld knowledge of Reginald Ufford being confirmed as baron.
Having known these things for some time, Percival had excused his silence by saying not only did he wish not to burden her as she settled into her role of Lady of Soaring, but these were matters of the Crown.
âHave I answered all you require, Adelaide?â
Gripping her robe closed, she turned from the window and met his gaze where he sat at hearth with legs outstretched, his no longer bare for having donned tunic and chausses in preparation to deal with Murielle and Jankin. âYou have,â she said and nearly thanked him for revealing what had transpired ahead of his investigation and now the investigation that had yet to yield enough to guarantee justice for Gisa.
But still Adelaide was ill-disposed toward him for his delay in lighting a candle amid the dark of Reginald. âA pity the king is not here to explain why he is slow to act on the Lady of Woodhearstâs wishes and Baron Wulfrithâs claim to those lands, and the likelihood of foul play against the messenger who failed to deliver the second missive.â
Percival sat forward. âEdward is no fool, but he wants solid proof ahead of acting against the son of a man to whom he is beholden.â
âHow is he beholden to Reginaldâs sire?â
âLord Ufford aided in stripping Edwardâs mother and her lover of their power which, for a time, reduced our king to a puppet.â
She folded her arms over her chest. âWhereas Reginald is fortunate Edward remains loyal to his sire, âtis most unfortunate for my sister.â
Percival stood and crossed to her. âThough it is not possible to right the wrong done Gisa, I shall do all in my power to see the miscreant punished.â He set a hand on her shoulder. âYou must be patient.â
Though she tried to curb her tongue, it spat, âThree years! And still I must be patient?â
âIf this matter is to be resolved lawfully, as it should be, you must let me do my work, Adelaideâand allow God to do His.â
Part of her knew he was right, but the greater part wound tight for what he had kept from her constricted good sense, and once more she spoke as she should not. âIf this matter is not lawfully resolved, then what? If you and God fail Gisa again, then what? I am to accept ever that murderer will be on the other side of the valley?â
His hand on her flexed. âNot only am I Wulfen-trained, but I am the law upon this shire. Though I find Reginald Ufford detestable, I shall work within the bounds of my faith and the law to defend those under my protection.â
She raised her chin. âAdmirable, but too late for Gisa.â
He removed his hand from her. âAs I carry that with me always, taking more seriously what I did not then, I
