NICHOLAS COULDN’T HELP smiling all the way to the car, then the apartment. He had Dayton’s respect and admiration. He parked and left the car, then rounded to Dayton’s side.

“Adam’s supposed to break a record this year,” Dayton said. “Most kicks by one player or something.”

“It’s a school record for points by a single kicker, and he’ll tie if he completes fourteen successful extra-point kicks this year. Fifteen will break the record.” He offered his arm. “He’s on track to break it because our team isn’t that good.”

“You know a lot about football.” Dayton walked with Nicholas to his door. “I’m the physical education major.”

“I like football.” Nicholas shrugged. “Get what you need, and we’ll go to my place.”

Dayton nodded. “Won’t be much.”

“No rush.” Nicholas stepped into the apartment. He couldn’t tamp down his excitement to return to his unit. “When I was a kid, my aunt and I used to watch all the professional games that were on the television. When she had to have chemo for her breast cancer, I went along, and we spent the time watching college games. She’s the reason I know the difference between a halfback and quarterback.”

“Sweet.” Dayton ducked into the bedroom.

He’d babbled. Oh, well. He felt comfortable around Dayton. “Anyway, I like football.”

“We can go to the games together,” Dayton said from the other room. “I love watching them live.”

“It’s better.” Nicholas glanced around the space. “Why do you have a lawn chair for furniture?”

“It was cheaper.” Dayton hobbled into the living room. “I didn’t want to spend the money on a chair that would be hard to move when I could get a less expensive one.” He shrugged. “I’ve moved four times since I started college. I’d rather be able to move myself than rely on help.”

“Makes sense.” Nicholas reached for Dayton’s bag. “Let me carry that for you.”

“I’m not dying, and I’ve only got the one class. I’ve only got one more semester so I didn’t overdo my course load for the summer.” Dayton swatted at him. He frowned. “I want to hang out with you—not make you work for me.”

“I’m trying to be a gentleman.” Nicholas slipped his arm around Dayton. “I’ll back down.”

“I’m not used to being cared for. If I go overboard or push too much, say something,” Dayton said. “You know what my last boyfriend did.”

“All too well.” He allowed Dayton to leave the apartment first, then waited as Dayton locked up. “We’re both learning how to be in relationships.” He kept his hand on Dayton’s back. “Let me go in first. Mark Twain won’t dart out the door, but I’d rather not chance it.”

“He’s timid?”

“No. Nosy.” He chuckled. “He loves to watch out the windows. If he had his way, he’d be an indoor-outdoor cat. I won’t allow it. He’d either get run over or something else, and I can’t not have him around.” He unlocked his apartment door. Mark Twain watched Nicholas from his spot on the couch. His tail thunked. When he spotted Dayton, he darted from the room and into the bedroom.
