I was out of breath and hurting. Soon, Katie came running up with my jacket and pants.

“Thanks, Katie,” I said, grateful to be warm again. “What was my time?”

Katie looked away. “1:10, Amy,” she said softly.

My jaw dropped. I had never run so slowly! One minute and ten seconds was only about four seconds slower than my normal time, but in a race as short as the 400, four seconds is like forever!

I bent down to untie my laces so that Katie wouldn’t see the tears in my eyes. There was no way I would ever be ready to run against Madison on Friday.
