Chapter Nineteen
Markus stared at the exterior of the plain brick building. âYou sure about this?â
âSure?â Sydney barked a short laugh. âHell, no. For all I know, theyâre going to kill us without even hearing us out. Brownies are lunatics.â
She studied the store. By all appearances, it was a simple pottery shop. An enameled sign over the door bore the silhouette of an eared vase and the title, âWulfâs Pottery.â
In truth, it was the front for the Brown Gang.
Sydney shifted her weight from one foot to the other. She was stalling and she knew it.
Her debate with Marla was fiery. Marla wanted to be the one to extend the offer of alliance, stating that it should come between leaders and equals. Sydney replied that if she went, as an unofficial envoy, that should the offer be rejected, she could always be said to be acting without the blessing of the gang leaders and thus avoid a loss of face for all of them.
She also wanted to target the Browns. Contracting the Browns for the sale of Shroom had already started paying dividends after just a few days, and to Sydney, it seemed a logical extension of their arrangement. Marla countered that she didnât trust the brownie gang and that they should not place all their faith, business, and allegiance in one source. Sydney countered that by saying that Marla didnât trust any of the other gangs and that the faeries were simply in the position of having to take a chance. They had gone round and round, for almost a week, without reaching a conclusion.
When they brought in the rest of the leaders for the decision, Gordon withheld his opinion, saying heâd go along with whatever the others decided. Markus supported Sydney, which Marla angrily dismissedâin her charming wayâas his dick doing his thinking for him. That had set leader and lieutenant to yelling at each other, which was only broken up when Dana threw her weight behind Sydney as well.
Danaâs decision took the wind out of Marlaâs sails. She agreed rather curtly, told Markus to keep an eye on Sydney so she didnât get herself killed, and ordered Sydney not to make a mess of things before dropping the matter.
Now, standing before the store, Sydney wondered if sheâd outsmarted herself.
She didnât know much about the Browns, save that they all wore green stocking caps and chestnut-colored tunics and pants that matched their skin and hair. Even though most were only four to four and a half feet tall, they were all quite a bit stronger than a faery and every single one of them had a violent streak.
âYeah, thatâs just the regular ones,â Markus said.
âHuh?â
âYou said brownies are lunatics. I agreed, saying those are just the regular ones.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âThey all have a temper but some slip over the edge and go outright homicidal. When that happens, they stop wearing long green hats and start wearing crimson ones. Other brownies call them redcaps.â
âIâve heard of them. Are they as bad as their reputation?â
âProbably worse.
