CHAPTER TEN

WHAT WAS WRONG with her?

Why had she kissed him back?

Beatrix walked as fast as she could to the palace. When her security detail offered to drive her, she waved them off. She needed the time alone in order to sort her thoughts.

She didn’t believe Rez when he said he’d kissed her to get past the awkwardness. There had been more to that kiss than some random, meaningless act. It had been tender and moving. And yet it had been powerful and full of emotion.

But was that emotion linked to the memories of his wife? After all, he’d just confessed the most traumatic moment in his life. His thoughts and emotions had everything to do with Enora. He’d been caught up in the memories of his late wife when he’d kissed her. That’s all it was. It wasn’t about Beatrix. Not really.

It had been the unexpected kiss that had her making a hasty exit because it couldn’t be sweet, little Evi. She was such an adorable baby. Anyone would instantly fall in love with her.

Try as she might, Beatrix couldn’t convince herself that it was solely the kiss that had her so upset. She just wasn’t that good of a liar. The truth was the sweet baby scared her more than anything else in her life.

Evi reminded her of what she couldn’t have—a baby of her own. Before Beatrix’s medical crisis, she hadn’t given much thought to having a family. She had been young and single. And so after the surgery it hadn’t been a big stretch to convince herself that she was fine with not having her own family.

And yet she wouldn’t let herself pick up the baby. She was afraid she would know exactly what she was missing by not being able to have children of her own. She was afraid the pain would be too much. She didn’t want to get caught up in the grief again. She’d already mourned the children she would never have—the family she wouldn’t have.

Instead she needed to stay focused on her life of service. It was a busy, demanding schedule. It would be enough.

It was time to end this fake relationship. She couldn’t do it any longer. They’d have to come up with some other sort of diversion.

She stormed through the back doorway of the palace and nearly collided with some staff that she’d never seen before. They were carrying linens in the shade of purple that had been selected for the wedding. It appeared they were working on more wedding preparations. Now they needed the bride and groom to return.

As Beatrix headed for her room, she pulled out her phone. It was so much easier to focus on someone else’s problems instead of her own. And so she began messaging her brother.

When are you coming home?

Why?

Because everyone has noticed your absence and the wedding isn’t far off.

Can’t you hold everyone off just a little longer?

I’ll try. But hurry home.

I’m doing my best.

Let me know if there’s anything I can do.

It was all she could ask of him.
