Julia’s sitting up in bed reading. “Hey, Skate,” she says.

“Hey.” I linger in her doorway and try to decide if I want to tell her this latest business with the Old Crow. Part of me wants to, but a bigger part of me doesn’t.

“You okay?”

I nod. “Just tired.”

I take a long soak in the tub with Mr. Bubble. Julia has a slew of lavender bath beads, glittery liquids, and powdery flakes, which magically turn into foaming bubbles. When I’m puckered I wrap myself in a fluffy towel and go into Perry’s room and stand naked in front of the dresser. I look at myself in the very same mirror Perry’s been looking in all his life, and I have such a strange feeling then, looking at my long wet hair and slick skin, like maybe I don’t belong here. I sit on the bed and look around the room. Our sweaters—the ones Perry didn’t take to college—are heaped together on the closet shelf. My blue nail polish sits next to his Speed Stick. So why do I feel crappy?
