Tango had ridden away to the south, following Sturgis along the trail a way just to make sure the man had no intention of turning back. Roberta had kept the men together for a while asking Gomez and the others how long a drive was enough for the cattle on that day. Leland had found the chuck wagon and he was determined to have the best meal Cooky could whip up at short notice. No one could blame the young man.
Dane Hollister decided that the best thing that could be done for the badly beaten Sparky was to have Cooky make up a bed for him in the back of his wagon, and he now returned to the grove where they had left the redhead to tell him what had happened and that he was through with riding for a while.
Moving through the shadows of the trees he came upon Sparky, now standing unsteadily, being half held up by a black-bearded man. Dane swung down from his buckskin and walked that way, Sparkyâs eyes opened wide as he watched Daneâs approach over the big manâs shoulder. Seeing the look, Hummel released Sparky and spun.
âIs that the way you got your reputation as a fighter â beating up on battered men?â Dane asked.
âThis one, Iâll beat him up again wherever, whenever I find him,â Hummel said in a gravelly voice. âItâs none of your business, cowpoke. Suppose you just get out of here before I invite you to the party as well.â
âOh, Iâve already invited myself,â Dane said, unbuckling his gunbelt which he hung over the pommel of his saddle; Hummel frowned at the dark-haired man, noticing the bulging at the shoulders of his shirt. He was big all right, but size meant nothing to Hummel when he was in a fighting mood. Big or small, he fought them all. Sparky eased aside, keeping his hands on the tree for support. Dane Hollister didnât wait for Hummel to come to him, but walked forward, grim determination on his face.
âGood,â Hummel said. âIâve been needing a little exercise. I didnât figure to get much with this sprout.â He removed his own sidearm, more for convenience than out of a sense of fair play. The bearded man stood waiting for Dane to make the first move.
Dane stepped in and winged a right-hand shot at Hummel, but the bearded man blocked it easily with his elbow. Grinning now, Hummel shot two rapid left hooks at Dane, who caught one of the blows on the top of his skull and barely managed to slip the second one. Hummel continued with mechanical precision. Another left and then two stabbing rights were aimed at Dane Hollister. One of these got through Daneâs guard and split his lips, starting the blood to flow.
âWell, cowboy!â Hummel bellowed. âWhat do you think now?â
Dane didnât respond. He wiped the blood away from his mouth as he circled Hummel, looking for an opening. Dane feinted with his left and then brought an overhand right down on Hummelâs ear.
