For example, P. Burke, The Renaissance (London, 1964), pp. 1–30; A. Brown, The Renaissance (London, 1988), pp. 1–5.

For example, J.R. Hale, Florence and the Medici (London, 1977), pp. 192–6, and England and the Italian Renaissance, with an introduction by Edward Chaney (London, 2005), pp. 60–78; A. Quondam, Tre Inglesi, l’Italia e il Rinascimento (Naples, 2006); C.E. Storey, ‘Myths of the Medici: William Roscoe and Renaissance Historiography’, unpublished D.Phil. thesis, University of Oxford, 2003, pp. 164–7. For an attempt at an overview in the British context, J.E. Law, ‘L’Inghilterra vittoriana e il Rinascimento italiano’, in M. Fantoni (ed.), Il Rinascimento Italiano e l’Europa: Storia e Storiografia (Treviso, 2005), pp. 547–62.

For the context of Roscoe’s life and work, I have consulted: H. Roscoe, Life of William Roscoe (London, 1833); T. Traill, Memoir of William Roscoe (Liverpool, 1853); the entries in the Dictionary of National Biography and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography; D. Macnaughton, Roscoe of Liverpool (Birkenhead, 1996); Storey, Myths; A. Wilson, William Roscoe: Commerce and Culture (Liverpool, 2008).

For this contribution I am working from the edition of The Life of Lorenzo de’ Medici, Called the Magnificent prepared by William Hazlitt, the son of the essayist, and dedicated to Sir Robert Peel, ‘the patron of art and the benefactor of letters’. It was published in London by George Routledge and Son, as the first volume of ‘The European Library’, in 1846, and it carries a ‘Memoir of William Roscoe’ based on the Life written by Henry Roscoe. The ‘Notes and Illustrations’ in the Hazlitt edition are a much slimmed-down version of the appendices in, for example, the 1800 edition, or the Bohn edition of 1847.

Roscoe, Life of Lorenzo, p. 4.

Ibid., pp. 4–5.

According to Roscoe, Life of Lorenzo, p. 6, ‘This notion was afterwards encouraged for malevolent purposes by those who well knew its falsehood’.

Ibid., p. 6.

Ibid., pp. 8–10.

Ibid., p. 22.

Ibid., p. 29.

Ibid., p. 32.

On p. 61 Roscoe cites, with evident approval, the judgement of Tiraboschi, that to be known as the father of Lorenzo was ‘a sufficient title to the gratitude of posterity’.

Roscoe, Life of Lorenzo, pp. 43–4 and notes.

Ibid., pp. 37–40. Under note 8, Roscoe cites correspondence between Agnolo Acciaiuoli and Piero in September 1446 in which the latter expresses forgiveness and regard while being unable to ignore the threat the former had posed to the republic: pp. 399–400.

Here, on p. 61, Roscoe cites Ammirato; this was done ‘perhaps because he had in his lifetime given directions to that effect; or because the parade of magnificent interment might have excited the envy of the populace towards his successors, to whom it was of more importance to be great, that to appear to be so’.

Roscoe, Life of Lorenzo, p. 66.

Ibid., p. 407.

Ibid., p. 66.

Ibid., p. 407.

Ibid., p. 66 ff.

Ibid., p. 116 ff. The mission is treated at length by Roscoe.

Ibid., p. 186.

Ibid., p. 189.

Ibid., p. 256 ff.
