Springtime Changes

As spring arrived, the flowers on each side of the brick steps leading up to the Watson home started to grow. There were yellow daffodils, red roses, and blue dahlias lining the front porch. The vibrant colors could be seen from the street and framed the steps to offer even more of a welcoming touch to the family home.

As time brought changes to all of the beautiful aspects of nature around them all, it also brought changes for each member of the family too.

Liam, feeling a little more independent, found himself starting to request to go out on his own more often. He still loved his little sister Emerson and certainly enjoyed his time with Joshua, but he also felt like he was outgrowing some of the activities they normally chose to do together. His parents had expected that his need for independence was coming but it still felt strange to them, nonetheless.

He had signed up for spring sports this season and he was excited to be joining the Track and Field team. His practices were often after school. He enjoyed his time running and worked very hard toward pushing himself to become a stronger competitor.

Emerson, also continuing to grow, had decided that she wanted to join the ballet club after school. She would often come home after practice explaining her latest dances and asking her mom and dad if they wanted to see her new routines.

She sometimes felt that it was unfair that Liam wanted to be on his own with his friends more often but she found that it helped to have Joshua to play with too.

Joshua’s personality was blossoming and he had been carefully weighing options for the many after school clubs available to him at his school.

If he chose, he could join the engineering club, where he would build models of cars and robots using special materials. While this idea seemed like a lot of fun, he just didn’t feel like it was the right fit for him.

At one point, he had also considered the art club where he would learn about different artists and how to create art pieces in their different styles. After careful consideration, he didn’t think this was the right choice for him either.

His final club consideration became his deciding choice. He joined the school chorus, where he would have the option of singing in a school performance at the end of the semester. He was excited about this option and looked forward to all that he would learn during his practices.

He mostly looked forward to spending time with the chorus teacher, Mr. Tompkins. Mr. Tompkins was a tall, thin man with tanned skin, much like Joshua’s, and a friendly smile. Joshua could always count on Mr. Tompkins to wear his signature look—a button-up shirt and a bow tie.

He often found himself trying to impress Mr. Tompkins with his quick learning of the songs being practiced or by repeating beats Mr. Tompkins had shown him on the hand drum.

I just want him to be proud of me, Joshua would think to himself as he worked to imitate Mr.
