A swirling torrent of wind and a deafening cacophony of noise met Astarte as she pushed open the roof door. Wide-eyed, she watched a helicopter land on her dormitory roof.

Rivka shoved her forward. “Stay low,” she yelled.

Astarte knew that the best time to thwart an abduction was early on, at the site. She looked around, searching for a weapon or some way to impede the helicopter. But these were pros. By all appearances, the Mossad. With a sinking feeling in her chest, she trudged toward the open door.

Ten seconds later, they were airborne, she and Rivka in the back seat behind the pilot, who sat on the right. A scowling man with a pink and purple scar running from jawline to temple sat next to him. Rivka buckled Astarte’s belt; as she did so, she snatched Astarte’s phone from her pocket. She leaned closer, her clean, floral scent noticeable in the cramped cabin. “The man with the scar is Menachem Dodi,” she yelled. It was like trying to be heard over a vacuum cleaner. “People think he’s going to be mean because of the scar. They’re right.”

Astarte looked at her. What was she supposed to say to that? Was this some kind of good cop, bad cop thing?

Rivka continued. “Do what he says. I’ll try to protect you as much as I can.” She pulled away; her dark eyes, almost black, held Astarte’s before leaning back in. “But there’s not much I can do.”

Again, good cop, bad cop? The copter banked, descending toward the Bozeman airport. Astarte swallowed. Apparently the copter was just the first leg of their journey. “Where are we going?” she shouted.

“Honestly, I don’t know.”
