We walked out of the building. The others were gathered there. Triangle told them what was happening. The aura of tension went down. I handed the gun back to the guy who pulled it.

When we got to my car Triangle said, “One more thing about Teddy.”

“Yes?”

“He was my brother.”

With that he went back inside.

I drove out of there like I’d been in the lair of a wolf pack in some Teutonic fairy tale. My neck told me it had been all too real.

It was dusk when I got home. I didn’t even go inside. I walked down to Artra Murray’s unit and knocked.

She opened the door. “Mike! Come on in.”

There was opera coming out of some speakers and nice smells from the kitchenette.

“Can I offer you something?” Artra said. “A beer?”

“Have a look at this.” I pulled my shirt open so she could see my neck.

She leaned in to look. “Good night, what happened?”

“Rope burn,” I said.

“I should say. Did somebody try to hang you?”

“Close.” I said. “Garrote, gang style.”

“Mike! Why on earth?”

“It’s a long story,” I said. “What do I do about this?”

“You sit down and take your shirt off.”

She went to work. The healing hands that had once worked their magic in one of the world’s leading hospitals now cleaned and salved my wound.

“You want to explain?” Artra asked as she began wrapping gauze around my neck.

“Trouble at work,” I said.

“When are you going to retire?”

“And do what? Collect seashells?”

“What about settling down? You have a sweetheart, right?”

“That ship has sailed.”

Artra gave me a sharp look. “I don’t like the sound of that. Sounds to me like somebody sailing just to get away.”

“What’s wrong with that if it keeps certain people from getting hurt?”

Artra stepped back. “I’m going to give you something to put on that tomorrow morning, and then you wrap it again, got it?”

“Yes, doctor.”

“Sophie, isn’t that her name?”

“Yes.”

“Does she want out?”

“I think it’s best,” I said.

“That’s not the question,” Artra said.

“I don’t want her hurt. It’s inevitable.”
