Chapter Seven

Atlas

I spend the afternoon talking the sheriff down, explaining why I shouldn’t be held in jail overnight for an assault charge. Fucking Denny. He’s the only man on this mountain that’d call the police over a punch between two grown men. I got lucky Sheriff Taylor was the one on duty. I’ve been helping him work on an old Dodge for the past few months. It’s something he’s fixing up for a car show this summer. Restoring old cars has been a hobby of mine since I was young, and in all honesty, I’ve been happy to help the sheriff out. Mostly because I play with his toys and pay nothing, but I think he feels guilty for taking up my time. I’ve brushed him off for the exuberant thanks before, but today his gratitude came in pretty convenient. Sure, it took most of the afternoon, but he was able to talk Denny out of any formal charges and he’s leaving the property until he gets the place sold.

It’s funny, by the time I’d turned around to bust Denny’s nose, it wasn’t the ranch I was mad about. It was the way he’d disrespected Clover, and my heart has been aching about it ever since. I hated watching her run off today. I hated stopping the physical connection where we did. I hated not having her number to call her, check on her, make sure she was okay.

The second Sheriff Taylor left, I drove back to the lodge, but it’s still nearly six o’clock by the time I pull in. That’s almost eight hours that Clover has been alone to be sad and stew in it, which only grates my nerves harder. Today was supposed to have been a fun memory for her. A nice day at the ranch to experience what cowboy life is like. Instead, she twisted her ankle and got shamed by my brother.

Fuck, I hate that guy.

When I step inside the lodge, it’s already buzzing with couples all dressed to the nines in blacks and reds. I’m supposed to play a set in an hour, but it’s not my priority currently. Right now, I need to find Clover and make sure she’s okay. Seemingly, that’s an easy task, minus the fact I don’t have her cell or room number.

Having been in and out of the hotel so much, I’ve gotten to know most of the front of house employees, like Jimmy who runs the bar and Lisa who’s at the front desk. She’s in her early seventies and will tell anyone who listens about her four grandchildren and their love for Disneyland. Which I’m always happy to listen to, she reminds me so much of my own grandmother. Tonight though, I’m hoping she’ll help me.

“Atlas,” she says with a rounded smile. She reaches out to grip my hand as I make my way to the front desk. There’s a fresh smell in the entry way tonight like they’ve had the floors waxed. “Don’t tell me
