Thirty-Seven

The tension of anticipation in Clark’s back was gone; it was obvious that whoever had killed Peter and nearly hit him was long gone. Instead, the anticipation was now replaced by an ache in his injured leg and a slight tremor in his lower back from holding still for so long.

Miri was pacing back and forth on the road. She hadn’t stopped moving since Gene had slowly worked his way over to the mine and begun tinkering with the device underneath Clark’s feet. As it turned out, the ordnance was an old communist model that Gene had a passing familiarity with. He’d not made any protest when drafted to the job.

Terry was sitting on top of the roof of the Toyota. “What do you think that guy was shooting? I mean, I couldn’t even see him.”

“Probably .338 Lapua or something like that. There’s no telling where he was.”

“I’d like one of those rifles.”

“Yeah, me too,” Clark said. “Maybe you can ask your boss to buy one when you get back to the States.”

“Will you two shut up already? Shit. At least the Russian guy doesn’t talk. I wish I could clone him.”

“She’s worried about you,” Terry said in a singsong voice.

Clark smiled as Miri grabbed the man by his pant leg and pulled him off the roof. Terry landed on his feet.

“You know what you’re doing down there?”

Gene looked up at Clark and frowned noncommitally, then went back to his work.

A trickle of sweat rolled down Clark’s back. “How long do you think they’d been watching us? I mean, they didn’t just put that drone up ten minutes before they started shooting.”

“My guess? A long time. I’ll bet they were watching what happened at the roadblock in Bahir Dar. They probably knew we were coming out, and that’s why Jin-won told the militia to hit us. That’s probably why we didn’t see them at the temple where we picked up Peter. They were just waiting and watching.”

Clark couldn’t argue with her logic. The only question now was, how were they going to catch up to Taktarov’s men and get the key back? Now that he had both of them, this was an urgent situation.

Clark was pulled from his thoughts by several taps on his leg. Gene had wire cutters in his mouth and a screwdriver in one hand. He pointed at Clark and did a walking motion with his fingers, then stopped and held up three fingers.

“You want me to take three steps?”

Gene looked annoyed. He pointed again.

“Me?”

He wiggled his pointer and middle finger.

“Walk?”

Gene held up a closed fist, then held up three fingers in succession.

“On three?”

Gene nodded, like Clark had solved two plus two.

“Duh, right? How didn’t I catch that the first time? Russian sign language…”

Gene tugged his pant leg.

“Does that count as one?”

Gene shook his head no.

“Got it. Okay, I’m moving on three.”

Gene smacked his leg once.

Clark glanced up at Terry and Miri, whose eyes were wide.

Gene smacked Clark on his leg the second time.

Clark looked down at
