Chapter 15

Caroline sat on the front deck of Keith’s house with Emily and Lora. She listened to the women chat while watching Hulk, Nick, and Keith take the kids on rides around the property. Tanner and Nathan were sporting the biggest smiles she’d ever seen.

When they arrived home that morning and discovered Bella, they were over the moon. Nathan was so excited he almost forgot about the Skidoo ride. He was even hesitant to go until Hulk told him that the dog would be going with them.

It was cold, but it was nice to get some fresh air and take her mind off her missing father. She’d also got a call in the middle of the night to let her know that Brooke had a baby girl and both mother and baby were doing fine.

Caroline wanted to see the baby that evening, and Hulk offered to watch the boys so she and her mother could meet her new niece. It was starting to feel as if they were living together, and it felt right. The problem was she didn’t know what he thought about it.

“Why don’t we go inside and warm up a bit?” Emily suggested.

“I thought you’d never ask,” Lora replied.

Caroline followed the women into the house. She shrugged out of her jacket and kicked off her boots. When she looked up, Lora and Emily were focused on her. She didn’t know why and looked down at herself to see if something was wrong.

“Why are you staring?” Caroline said when she didn’t see anything wrong.

“I’m worried about you,” Lora admitted.

“I’m fine,” Caroline told her.

“You’ve hardly said ten words since you got here. I know you’re scared, and we need you to know you aren’t alone,” Emily interjected.

“I know, and thanks. It’s just hard to shut off my brain sometimes and try to figure out where my dad could be. He’s been missing over a week now.” Caroline lowered herself down on one of the kitchen chairs.

“I know what you’re going through.” Emily pulled a chair next to her.

Caroline looked at the sweet redhead and thought Emily had no idea what she was going through. Nobody did unless they’d been there. It was an indescribable feeling that she wouldn’t wish on anyone.

“I know what you’re thinking.” Emily smiled. “There’s no way anyone could know how you feel.”

“You can’t unless you’ve been through it,” Caroline whispered.

“Several years ago, my mother was abducted, and she was missing for a long while. We were lucky she was found and the man who took her, well, he’s someone I don’t want to talk about, but when I say I know the agony you’re going through, I do.” Emily grasped Caroline’s hand.

“It’s hard to think about anything else,” Caroline admitted.

“It is, but you can’t allow it to break you. If you need to talk to someone, I’m here, and I have a therapist who helped. If you need her name, just ask.” Emily stood up. “Now get up here so I can give you a hug.
