CANTOR RECONSIDERED

I believe Cantor is correct. But when someone as brilliant and profound as Weyl rejects a belief of mine, it forces me to ask, why do I hold these beliefs? In particular, why do I believe Cantor?

Cantor’s core insight from which modern mathematics unfolded, like a new human unfolding from a fertilized egg, was his “diagonal” argument that not all infinite sets can be placed in one-to-one correspondence with the natural numbers. This core insight consists of three concepts, namely,

1. An infinite sequence of zeros and ones,

2. The set of all infinite sequences of zeros and ones, and

3. Cantor’s diagonal argument.

Let us examine each of these concepts in turn.
