Chief Machinist Mate Jake Utley (circa 1930-35), sits atop a foot locker, probably in his quarters with VP-7, then assigned to make a photographic survey of the territory of Alaska. To Jake's right is a large camera he used to take aerial photos of Alaska long before it became a state.

Clad in foul-weather gear, Chief Machinist Mate Jake Utley stands beside his seaplane. This photo probably was taken sometime between 1930 and 1935 when Utley was stationed with the patrol plane squadron, VP-7, based in San Diego. In the early 1930s, VP-7 was dispatched to make a photographic survey of the territory of Alaska, which wouldn't become a state until 1959. VP-7's logo, reminiscent of the Keystone Cops, is visible on the fuselage to Jake's right..
