Chapter 10

The thing about Mountain Pass Pizza is that it has the best pizza on the planet. And that’s not just some overembellished hometown pride or anything. It’s literally the best in the world. It’s outrageously addictive too, which is why whenever you come inside, the place is always packed and everyone’s in a good mood.

Nick and I sure are when we find a table, which is a gift from god because it’s next to impossible to just walk in and sit right down. You’re usually awkwardly standing around the sides of the restaurant waiting to pounce. But a little four-top is empty, and it’ll be a squeeze, but we can fit the five of us who are joining.

“Okay, wait. We’ve got to buy a lottery ticket or something—this is our lucky day,” I say.

“We’re sixteen, Riley. Well, seventeen now for you. Happy Birthday.”

Nick pulls me in for a hug and I say into his shoulder, “It’s a golden birthday miracle! Seventeen on the seventeenth. Do you think this good luck will last the rest of the year?”

“I wouldn’t count on it.”

“At least the rest of the day?” I pull back so I can look him in the eye. So I can see that reassuring look he always gives when I’m worked up and can’t talk myself down from these jitters. I need some good luck right now. “I really need this hangout with Connery to work out tomorrow. Like, I don’t even know if it’s technically a date.”

“Everything’s going to be fine,” Nick says. “Just be yourself and he’ll love you.”

“It’s got to be a good sign that Connery already has such a great read on me he can recommend books that I’d like and be right about it.”

Nick slumps in his chair.

“Okay, what’s that about?” I ask.

“It’s just that I’ve been recommending movies to you for years and you never get this excited about them. But then some guy you just met gives you a recommendation for a book and you can’t put it down? I’m a little offended.”

“But it’s always, like, superhero or action movies, which are great, but not really me, you know? Don’t take this the wrong way, but you were always recommending stuff you loved as opposed to tailoring your suggestions to fit my personality.”

Nick’s mouth drops open. “Wow. I guess I never thought of it that way.”

“Seriously, don’t worry about it. I know I yak on and on about my favorite makeup brands and stuff. It’s natural to want to share what you love with your best friends. But it’s also okay if they don’t want to partake in those things.”

“I started painting my nails after you busted out that OPI kit freshman year.”

“Yeah, but that was because you liked it. You said you liked the way the darker tones looked on your nails. You do like it, right?”

Nick gets his small smile and says, “Right.” He even looks at the maroon shade on his hands right now, running his pointer finger over his thumbnail.
