PART 2
EVENTFUL HAPPENINGS
11. A FRESH START
Alexa was keen to hear how Calum and Grandad had responded to her images. She imagined what it might feel like to be famous, and what it would be like to open a glossy magazine and see her images splashed across the pages.
With a bit of luck, she thought, some cavers might be at White Cloud within the next couple of days. She desperately hoped this would happen before she had to return to school. She quite liked the idea of being photographed with them and could almost see herself on the front page of a magazine, following their visit: âSchoolgirl Leads Cavers to Enchanted Roomâ or some such heading, she thought.
Not that she had to prove anything to anyone, including her father, but she still rather liked the idea of becoming âpublishedâ or âfamousâ. She thought she wouldnât even mind if she had to go on national television. Bring it on! She sat up, pretending she was on camera.
Alexa checked her watch, it read 2.10. Throwing down her photography magazine, she got up from the day bed she had been lounging on. She stopped in front of the mirror above the sideboard and pulled her hair back into a high ponytail. She leant over and examined a small pimple on her chin and hoped it didnât explode into something gross over night. She wanted to look good for the event tomorrow, she thought.
She made her way out to the barn. Sheâd decided sheâd get up extra early, and plait Liqui up in the morning, except for her tail, of course. Sheâd already pulled the top of that, so sheâd only have her mane to do, but sheâd give her a shampoo now and then sheâd be nice and clean for the event tomorrow.
Suzy was already down at the wash bay. Ripple was tied to the rail and pawing at the concrete pad as Suzy rubbed her hands into his soapy coat. She loved the feel of the silky suds mixing with his coat. She made some squiggles and designs with her fingers and wrote his name along his rib cage.
Giggling and admiring her artwork, she picked up the hose, turned the nozzle and sprayed the soap from his coat. Sheâd already washed his tail and mane and she was pleased his tail had grown quite a lot in the past year. At least now, she thought, he kind of looked like a normal horse. Besides, being clipped out, no one would ever know he was a curly. Not that that worried her at all, it was just that she liked the idea of showing him as well, at some stage.
Ripple spun his head around and looked at Alexa and Liquorice approaching from behind the barn. Alexa was wearing her tee- shirt and shorts, and on the bottom of her bare legs she had on her jodhpur boots. Sheâd had several horses jump on her toes over the years and finally sheâd got the message to wear protective footwear around them.
