What in the name of all things holy was he doing?

Clint stood in front of the door to Fee’s home away from home, her suite at The Bellamy, and glared at his highly polished wingtips. He was dressed in a tuxedo, bow tie perfectly knotted, hair brushed and his face clean of its habitual scruff. He’d spent more time dressing for this one night than he had the entire week.

All because Fee had asked him to accompany her to the New Year’s Eve ball at the Texas Cattleman’s Club. He didn’t do balls, the TCC or people, so why on God’s great green wonderful earth was he standing outside her hotel door prepared to do all three?

All because a gorgeous brunette with a huge heart and wild curls asked him. And he couldn’t blame a post-sex haze for his saying yes. They hadn’t even been in the same room. She’d called him up, issued the invitation and he hadn’t hesitated.

He was definitely losing his mind.

Clint jammed his hands into the pockets of his tuxedo pants and rocked on his heels. He and Fee had spent all their free time together lately—including very slow horse rides (Fee had never ridden before and was taking forever to learn), quiet dinners and sitting on the porch, drinking wine and talking—and it had been the best time of his life.

The Fee he was coming to know was nothing like the fast-talking, over-the-top character she played on the two episodes of Secret Lives he’d managed to watch. Oh, she was a firecracker in either incarnation, and wasn’t scared to share her opinions, but one-on-one she was softer and gentler than her on-screen persona.

Clint raked his hand through his hair. She was... amazing.

Uncomfortable with that thought, Clint tried to distract himself by thinking how much had changed, in Royal and in himself.

The Blackwood siblings versus Miranda war was still raging, Kace LeBlanc was still, he presumed, doing what lawyers did to resolve the situation. The Secret Lives crew was still milking the drama for reality gold.

All the players in that saga would be present tonight and arguments and snide comments were, as he’d heard from Fee, expected. The situation was tense and everyone was on edge.

Not his problem.

But, at some point the buzz would die down—probably sooner rather than later—and Fee would return to Manhattan. That was a given.

He’d miss her, that much he knew. He also accepted they couldn’t have a long-distance relationship. What they had wouldn’t survive her leaving Royal. It was a long way from Manhattan to Texas, and if he could barely cope with the small town of Royal, he’d go mad visiting New York.

And, for Fee, Royal was a quirky place to visit but she was too much of a city girl to settle down in a smallish agricultural town.

Not that she had any plans to settle down anywhere. Fee, as she’d told him, liked having options, being able to move on when she needed to. Despite his career in the military, he’d always know he’d return to Royal and his land.
