Chapter 18

Quinn

The ride down to McLain was enlightening. I’m beginning to think I’m doing a bang-up job of projecting my emotional baggage from hurt in my past onto Iverson. I believed him when he said I was the first girl he ever took on a SkyGlider. That night was special for me, and I could tell as I sat there questioning him, examining his body language, and listening to his tone that he was hurt. He didn’t understand why I was asking him about that night, and that meant because, like he said, it was a first for him.

When he asked me if something was bothering me, it was on the tip of my tongue to bring up Isla, but I didn’t. I promised him I would tell him, and I meant it. The only reason I pulled back in the car was because I didn’t want my sister’s death to overshadow our weekend. Her death would easily become the talk of the night, and I can tell Lou was excited to come down here and get away with her friends.

Closing the door to Lou’s Range, I walk around back to help him unload. After sharing our playful comments about marriage, we stayed quiet for the remainder of the drive back to the Castle. I’ve never put too much thought into marriage. My mother was single my entire life, and I’m not one of those women who has fantasized about a venue, dress, and menu the way Lou has, but then again, maybe I never thought about any of those things because I hadn’t found the person I wanted them with. Even though they were meant to be a light-hearted joke, saying those words out loud with Iverson felt different. It was unexpected, but that’s what love is: falling for an unexpected person at an unexpected time.

“Look who climbed out of a hole to join us.” A tall man drawing a striking resemblance to Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries says as he greets Iverson and pulls him in for a pound hug. “Who is your friend?”

“I think we both know she’s more than a friend.”

I roll my eyes and extend my hand in greeting. “I’m Quinn.”

“Damon.” He takes my hand in a firm grip.

“No shit,” I say without thought. Damn, I really needed to filter that comment.

He smiles. “Let me guess, you’re a fan of The Vampire Diaries.”

I thin my lips and rock back on my heels. “Maybe,” I offer sheepishly. I don’t want to offend him. The character is hot as sin, but he’s also a morally gray bloodsucker.

“Don’t worry, I get it all the time.”

“If you’re done flirting with my girl,” Iverson cuts in, possessively wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me close. “Is there a certain place you want me to set up my tent?”

“I’m married, remember? You can’t be mad at me because she’s into tall, pasty, and mysterious.”

“Oh my God, the two of you are ridiculous,” I say before turning toward the trunk in search of my bag.
