Part C: For the next ten days, your job is to do one challenge a day for a total of ten. Use your journal to jot down your thoughts, feeling, and reactions. As you do each challenge, note your actual distress level, and compare it to your predicted distress level. Overall, was it higher or lower? Did you notice any patterns? Were some challenges easier than you predicted and others more difficult?

How Is This Exercise Rewiring Your Brain?

This exercise activates your PFC and amygdala to strengthen the resilience network of your brain. When you actively seek out discomfort, your brain will learn that emotional distress is not “the enemy.” There’s no threat to survival here—you’re still safe! Through these repeated experiences of willingly feeling uncomfortable, your brain learns to break the cycle of reacting to potential emotional distress by sounding the fear alarm, which only brings on more of that emotional distress you were trying to avoid in the first place. By doing this exercise, you’re rewiring your brain to not react so intensely, but instead to learn that it can handle uncomfortable feelings and difficult situations.

On a scale from 1 to 10, rate how motivated you are to continue working on rewiring your brain to be resilient and effective at moving past and through difficult situations.
